I've just gone off for a quick google - to see what Wikipedia has to say about whose Tunnel it is anyway.

Musta been sleep "on the watch" on that one:shocked::shocked::shocked: - as its obviously 50% "ours" (well...it obviously should be) - but it doesn't seem to be from that....:o

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurotunnel

Have we got the word "mug" tattooed across our collective foreheads?

Yup. That would be the sum of it.

That's not even talking about the hit to tourism.

    I think tourism can/will have a workaround.

Airports aren't affected by the migrants, and there are alternative ports, for people/families travelling for work/holidays.

Yes, tourism isn't a big part of the profits, but it's still a loss if tourists use something else.

The whole purpose of the tunnel was that it was quick, economical and safe. It isn't that today. As tourists and lorries find other routes, maybe a little longer, maybe a little more expensive, but better than the dire car park it is today, will they come back? Will the tunnel continue to show the profits it has?

Everyone is looking at the humanitarian/illegal immigrant picture at the moment, but I am sure the bean counters in the city will be looking at spread sheets, bottom line, costs and percentage losses. The resolution of this may come from economic pressures rather than any immigrant issues.

I plan to drive to Berlin later this year/early next year.

If neither Dover or the tunnel are clear, I'll go via Hull, to Belgium. I'll be stopping overnight at Antwerp anyway.

It's a couple of hundred extra miles each way (so about 40 Litres extra in total), but if it saves me hours of waiting, it'll be worth the extra mileage.

Didn't think of that! Duh. I live on a farm and I would really like to be able to spend more time at home with my son.

Part time would be an option with no mortgage :)

Make sure that you'll still be covered for "sick pay" (if needed) if you intend to work part-time.:)

Many years ago when I was at secondary school (1970's) there was a large influx of Ugandan Asians into the country.
Every child in our school took a letter home asking for help for these people, by way of clothing and bedding.

    People helped if they could.
My mother sent in a winter coat, children's clothes which we had outgrown and a blanket.
There were mounds of clothes and bedding which were collected for distribution.
I don't remember who did this (possibly the Red Cross)

I am just struck by the change in attitude of people and found this article which I think is interesting.

Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p
  • I would also regard the odds of migrants leaving my vehicle alone and not trying to get into it as not that good and getting worse.

Are we talking private car/motorcycle, or lorry/coach?

If the former, I don't think you have a lot to worry about.

Seems rather perverse for the British armed forces to be taking migrants off leaky boats in the Med, and ferrying them to Europe, only to threaten to shoot them if they dare cross to the UK.

It seems utterly mad to me to have rescued them off the boats in the first place. All they need to do now is wait for a British Navy ship to come in sight, then set off in a rowing boat, knowing they're on their way to Europe.

It's against the law of the Sea to do anything but rescue people in distress.

There is rather a big difference between one small group of people (which was the main factor that applied in that case) and a Britain that was rather "wealthier" than it is now.

This crisis is a constant onrush of people - from numerous countries - and with no end in sight (ie no point at which we can say "That's it then - all x,000 affected people are now sorted out/dealt with/end of problem". We are going to get hundreds of thousands in if the situation is just left - and it wouldn't surprise me if it goes up into the millions (this into a country that is already overcrowded and making lots of budgetary cutbacks).

What the government does when more people are asking for a "slice of the cake" is not to provide some more cake and put it on the table. Nope - they try and divide that exact same size cake between a lot more people wanting a slice of it and that's exactly what will happen to our Welfare State (whats left of it).

We can see what happened when lots more people started pushing to go to University as an example of that. First of all there were grants (which, I believe, would be around £10,000 in todays money if still available) and, of course, tuition fees were paid for. Then it turned into loans and tuition fees got introduced and then put up. This did seem to pretty much coincide with all those extra people also asking for university places. That is - one big University cake and lots more people wanting to "eat it".

I understand there are ones that have tried to get/have managed to get into private cars too.

All well and good to think "Right...all windows up and door locked and don't forget to check the boot" - but it would still feel very threatening (not to mention dealing with yer "everyday necessities" en route on the journey - like loobreaks and foodbreaks etc that you have to get out of the car for).
