Just a quick note before I go out to support my Greek friends and watch them Greek dancing. The report on things being good in Corfu was correct. No queues at the ATM machines, which all had money, more stocks than usual in the supermarkets and chemists. Also, all the garages have had new supplies of fuel delivered today. Most of us are carrying on as usual. Few Greeks had sixty euros a day before the cash restrictions, so that isnt making much difference either.

Due to the skills I learned on here, I saw this one coming. We used all our euros to pay the mortgage in advance and stock up on food and fuel supplies, along with meds and other stuff. We have just three hundred euros in the bank to pay the next electric bill, or should it arrive first, the tax bill for our property tax.

The vote seems to be evenly split and I have no idea what will happen if neither is a clear winner. It is ONLY a vote for or against austerity, nothing else. I will keep posting so you know how things are, whenever I can get online. Some comments and shares are being blocked and the internet is unreliable.

What interesting times we live in! On a personal note, I am fine, feel well prepared for anything that happens and remain optimistic, although I do suspect they may try to rig the vote to be a yes, rather than a NO. I hate the fact that lies have been told in the media about shortages and desperation. Life goes on as normal here and the weather is amazing. xxxxxx:T

Unless of course your country is also bankrupt. Then the protection is lowered by considerably more:

    Sh*t a brick!

This is not actually true...it was written to try to get the Greeks to vote yes to more austerity!

Footage of the NO protest last night in Athens.........

and yes, it was a peaceful protest, the most exciting thing was the number of hugs and kisses the prime minister and finance minister got from the crowd
  • Hi 1T lovely to see you posting again, I guess life is difficult for all of you in Greece and the Islands at this time, uncertainty is hard to live with and maintain a peaceful state of mind. Whatever the outcome of the vote or if Greece stays or goes I'm glad all is well with you and yours, well done for getting and continuing to be prepared and I wish you and your fellow Greek compatriots the outcome that THEY wish for. Stay in touch love, it's nice to have you back, Lyn xxx.

Thank you 1Tonsil! Wishing you and Corfu and all the Greeks to be liberated from all this (though it sounds like its fine on Corfu! I'm glad to hear it!).

Thank you both for your lovely words. Thanks to this long thread I had all the information I needed to get myself prepared. I did put a warning on my Facebook for my friends a week in advance to tell them to get stocked up on food and fuel if they had not already done so. It is amazing, even when they know its going to get difficult.....that my English friend can sit with a straight face and tell me he only has two tomatoes and a bag of onions in the fridge! Unbelievable...and this from an educated man who I would have thought was resourceful.

I have no vote tomorrow of course, as I am a British citizen, despite the fact that it is about Europe and I am a European who pays taxes in Greece. If I had a vote, it would have to be a NO, for all the old folks I have seen struggling on very little pension for the last four years and for all the families with no one working .

There is a great sense of helping each other around, and also a move back to buying local produce. Thank goodness its the height of the summer, as all the fruit and veg are ripe and ready for eating and we have more than we could ever need. It would have been much more difficult if it had happened in the winter months.

No matter what the vote is tomorrow, its going to be difficult for the coming months. I have a feeling Greece is going to be punished by the EU for calling their bluff and calling the referendum. I do hope the vote is no, as many Greeks have nothing more to give. There have been more than four thousand suicides since the austerity measures began in Greece.

The Greeks will be voting all day, which is a complex matter as they all have to travel to the place they are registered to vote, which is usually the place they were born or grew up in. I don't know what to do tomorrow, I might just retire to the pool in the shade and read a good book, nothing to do with politics or Europe!

Right, off to watch my friends Greek dancing. I have no doubt there will be some good natured banter around about the vote, but it has given some of us hope when we were losing it. Goodnight folks xxxx

I'd quite like to kiss the finance minister - but not necessarily for his policies

    :o

    :rotfl:

He is rather sexy - in a Voldemort kind of way

Nice to hear an update from you.

Mardartha....come and visit before taking the jump!

Depends on who you mean by 'immigrants'.....asylum seekers are not allowed to work and, they are provided with accommodation and board and a small allowance weekly for personal spending until a decision is made on their asylum application.

I think that immigrants from EU countries are treated the same as Irish citizens..... NI natives can carry either a ROI or UK passport ( as can I as I was born before 1949). Thats the end of my knowledge probably, but any further questions will be investigated for your information!,
