Okays....so we tend to be better-informed than a lot...but this is a good clear video for explaining it:

I particularly clicked at point being made in about the last minute of this video.
.....and the very first mental connection I made was not a good one.....0 -
Interesting. Does the Irish health service not pay for hip replacements, or is the queue so long that you had to go private?
There is no free medical treatment in the Republic of Ireland. My nephew put his hand through the glass in the back door four years ago when he was twelve. The fee then for getting him looked at in A&E was €100.0 -

I didn't know that .
One of my friends is thinking of retiring there and she has a number of medical problems. Will give her a ring tonight to check she knows.
Another thing to think about as you get older, not just in emergency, access to medical services where you live.

I've been wandering around p!nterest for all sorts, and stumbled across this link; it's American, so some things may not apply, and I know many of us will know about or have many of these ideas, but it might be useful nonetheless.

Although it's still very hot and humid here, I am still trying to up my preps. I've got a healthy stash of folding stuff, and jingly stuff, in safe places, which I've added to after all the hoo-haw in Greece. Food preps have been sidelined for a bit, but after reorganising (loose term for shoving stuff further into the corners!) the garage I'll be able to add some stuff in there and in my bedroom cupboards.
My friend who lives on Corfu posted on FB, saying it was business as usual for tourists at least, a little wobbly for tax-paying Greeks and pensioners at the minute, but said don't cancel your jollies as the place relies heavily on tourism. She did say take plenty of hard cash, though!

I didn't know that either - ie Republic of Ireland not having free health care. Crikey!
Admitted my knowledge of health care in Ireland extended about as far as there was one medical procedure I'd have had to cross the seas to England for if it had ever been necessary (but I'm past the relevant agegroup for that now anyway). Don't know if a sea voyage would still be necessary or no if I were in that agegroup and needed it.
So that's my knowledge of health care there on a postage stamp.
That will indeed make a few people think twice about moving to Southern Ireland. I would certainly have assumed I could move there, if I chose to, in all innocence of my (potential) living costs being dearer in that way.0 -
I wonder how 1Tonsil is getting on? She's in Corfu too, isn't she? I hope we'll hear from her again.0

I'd like to hear too, ivyleaf, but I suspect she's too busy prepping!
Just seen this on the Guardian website about savers' protection being lowered at the end of this calendar year: http://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/jul/03/bank-of-england-cuts-savings-protection-euro-crisis
Because of the strength of the pound against the euro! Mad!2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Swings and roundabouts there then...
The plus side being it looks to be possible to ring fence house equity money that's sitting in an account temporarily:T
The bad side being I don't suppose many of us realise our level of savings protection generally is set at the same level as the Continent - so if theirs went down to "not a lotta money" - then so would ours:eek:0 -
Do any members have a Wood Gas Stove?
I saw the original ones on fleabay for forty odd quid and some copies for twenty two.
I found a similar one on Amazon for just under £17, so not as much to lose if it is naff!
The reviews seem to be good though.

For those who have one, have you tried burning pine cones in it?
We have lots of pine trees in the area so I have access to lots of those.0 -
Evening all,
jk0.....I could have had my hip done for something like €1k if I had been prepared to wait for around a year, luckily we were in the position of being able to scrape together the cost for private care.
It is not strictly true that there is no free health care in the Republic of Ireland, much depends on income, I think that the current threshold is something like €500 per week for a single person, which entitles you to free doctor visits, necessary surgery, medication cost is something like €2.50 per item per month. Many people have private health care which is very expensive and would not cover things like A&E for people without free care. If someone without free care is admitted to hospital there is a charge for 6 days at daily rate, no matter how long is the period of hospitalisation.
Not sure what I would advise to people considering retiring here.....pensioners dont have to pay for either a tv license or driving license, bus, train and Luas travel is free throughout the island to those over 66, and there is a small free allowance for electricity, but the cost of living here is higher than in UK.
I would advise anybody conxidering a move a long way from their current location to think long and hard about it and to thoroughly research what their situation will be before they move. Www.welfare.ie
Thus endeth the rant according to Marie!
