Preparedness for when

I had several TVL letters when I moved into my first flat. Obviously not having a TV (my preference) gives creative types more time to spend on things like the 2 pages of A4 paper I sent back informing them of all my hobbies and why I didn't have time for a telly. No more letters after that. I do have a TV now for the small person. We still don't watch it much. I don't think it's been on in the last week or so. We like Great British Bake off when that's on.....that's about it.
I will be investing in more tinned supplies now that I have made some space for them. to be fair I'm not sure I actually want to survive if the rest of the human race are going under.0 -
Did anyone see the welsh couple who moved to the back if beyond in Norway???
OK I couldn't cope with 8 months of snow a year, but you must be very organised to prep for that type of lifestyle ..
I have always wondered if someone could prep for a full winter, and not go shopping etc during that time etcWork to live= not live to work0 -
So - they've done it then.
That is the Greeks have refused to pay the IMF loan payment due by 11pm yesterday.
Now what.......?

And, at our level, here in Britain - can I put in a plea to all small businesses that haven't yet adopted the facility for payment by DEBIT card to do so right NOW!
I foresee the possibility of a lot of arguments between customers and firms at some point - if its the firms fault they haven't taken money paid to them fast enough at the time they are paid it by the customer.
(ie that scenario I envisage in recent posts of the customer paying the money at a time they know of a certainty that they DO have their own money sitting in their own bank account - BUT the Government nicking some of it in between payment and cashing of the cheque).
I know I am very "honourable" in fulfilling my financial obligations - but I would argue back if it was a firms fault they hadn't taken my money out of my account in time to stop the Government nicking it en route to its destination. I don't wish to go down that road of having to argue who would "carry the can" - so please don't put your customers in that position.
Arrange NOW to take all payments by debit card (as well as in cash).
Personally - if I were a small business-owner - I would now be refusing payment by credit card though. It would be pure and simple = debit card or cash only.0 -
You are taking through your bottom....
If you issue a cheque the person has 6 months to cash that cheque, it is up to the person issuing the cheque to make sure the is sufficient funds tn the account so the cheque can be honoured, regardless of when within that 6 months the cheque is presented. So regardless if you told them to put the cheque into the bank straightaway.. And they don't you are still liable to honour that cheque.
If I remember rightly. . cheques for personal accounts are being phased out??
At our business, we do not except cheques... Due to there being no guarantee anymore where as before you bank card would gurentee a cheque for up to £50/£100Work to live= not live to work0 -
Oh yes I did see the programme, wasn't it wonderful? It wasn't Norway though it was in Jamtland in northern Sweden and I've been there. It is just miles upon miles of wonderful forests and lakes with the odd little settlement here and there. We were travelling on the train known as the Inland Banan that starts at Mora which is about an hour north of Stockholm and goes right up the spine of central Sweden to a copper mining town way above the arctic circle called Gellavare which really is a like a frontier town but totally amazing. We stopped off at some amazing places along the way for a night or two in hotels but it was the best holiday we've ever had. Sweden is a beautiful country. Favourite place was a small town called JokkMokk above the arctic circle with a huge lake and we had such a hot day when we were there that it topped 32 degrees and we had to go paddling in the lake to keep cool!!!0

I pay most trades using electronic banking and faster payments. They get their money in about 4 hours.
When Lehmans went under, I was responsible for a significant budget in a large company that had just done a bond issue and a rights issue to fund some investments. I (and a couple of others) was asked to work out what planned spending I could do immediately... it's the only time when no one has questioned how much I'm spending and why, or whether we'd got the best deal. They just wanted the money out of their bank account and into someone else's asap... in some cases we paid up front for 3 years' worth of services. The accountants were busy moving budgets around as several of us managed to spend our year's budget and more in a couple of days!0 -
I'm just back from a break on Mainland Spain that we have been many times before. We noticed that most of our regular haunts are now taking cash only.0

GQ, the last three point and click cameras I've had have all had a video facility - £40 jobs, honestly, though the first one was really basic. My gifted phones have it as well. They download to the lappie via a usb cord.
I too am wondering what the future will hold financially - I think it'll take a long time to play out, and unlike mststm, I haven't finished the renovations I need to do on the house, but its not bad. Must do better, unless a black swan paddles by I'm pretty sure I've got time  hope so, anyway.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Glad to hear I'm thinking along the right lines - ie wanting bank account money in someone else's account and their responsibility:T
I think we all know the "6 months to put them" through about cheques - but I doubt that would save a firm having an argument with a customer about who "carried the can" if the customer said "I gave you that cheque 4 weeks ago and I have a bank statement here that proves my money was in my account until 2 weeks after I gave you the cheque. Not my fault you went to put in the cheque 1 week ago - but the Government had done a bail-in in the meantime (so there wasn't enough money at that precise time to cover it). Down to you matey - for not putting that cheque through fast enough. Have a nice day:)"
Its not on to expect to try and make efficient people pay the penalty of covering delays other people have in processing payments.
I learnt a bit from one of my employers and the one plus point of having had them for an employer is I learnt a lot about "what other people can get up to" and "how to cover your backside against all eventualities". Glad to think that employer has proven some use to me in that way....0
