Preparedness for when

Hi all, just posting while the going is good. We have the most horrendous storms and had them all night again. It is so dark at 9am it looks like midnight. We will probably lose the electric shortly as well as the internet service. It's looking really bad.
I feel so sorry for the tourists as the weather has been like this for the last four nights. It's impossible to sleep with the thunder bolts so close. The rain is amazing but only local flooding at the moment and in Corfu town.
Have a great day folks. Going to sort out my prepping stuff in the house and get all the candles ready and the oil lamp filled . If the electric goes out we are not going to be able to manage as there isn't a lot of light coming through the windows. Unbelievably its going up to 30 degrees so at least its not cold.
Hope to catch up with you all later. Have a lovely day xxxxx“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
Shhesh, I've just popped on here for a mo to see what's going on???
Y'all been on the sherbert aint ya?
I have absolutely no excuse for being bizarre on here...I don't drink lol..... no the diversions are just a bit of light relief in a very stressful world.
There are far more scary things going on in real life than zombies....
Welcome to the new members, no question is regarded as silly and you can pick up some great tips on this thread. We are talking about situations that can happen to anyone, although living in Greece I seem to get more than my fair share of 'situations' to cope with. It helps to talk about things and you feel better if you feel prepared so you can deal with things.
The only reporting that has gone on has been when people get really rude or don't understand the underlying message of this thread....that we can help each other prepare for whatever crops up and support each other in the struggle in everyday live.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
I just happened to be on this thread whilst listening to the Radio 4 news and am so gobsmacked at what I've just heard that I'm not sure which thread to put it on..
Apparently the Govt. are blaming allotment holders who grow their own potatoes for causing the potato shortage. It seems we allotment growers are responsible for spreading the same type of blight that caused the Irish Potato Famine. They recommend that everybody buys potatoes from farm shops/supermarkets rather than growing their own.
How does that work then???!!!!!

Hi all, I spent most of yesterday afternoon & evening reading through this thread. I'd begun the day looking for solutions to the rising costs of food thats being reported in the media & was really pleased to discover that I'm not the only person who worries about stockpiling enough supplies to see me & mine through an emergency!
Personally I'm preparing for food shortages/extortionate food price rises but friends & family won't hear me talk of it.They think I'm nuts & worrying about something that won't happen but even if nothing does happen, then next year we'll be eating at this years prices...... ...... this can only be a good thing right ?!!
My question today is where's the best place to have my 'store cupboard'? Hubby has said that he'll build some shelves underneath the stairs for me but I also have a metal framed wardrobe (canvas type covering) in my bedroom & was wondering if this would be better? We aren't at risk of flooding but I think the bedroom maybe too warm for tinned foods?
I'll probably end up filling both spaces knowing me!... all advice appreciated.0 -
Morning all, and welcome MrsChristmas!
You're not nuts to be worried about food prices, etc., that's one of the things people on OS talk about all the time, you'll be in good company. Someone better qualified than me will be along before too long, but I store tinned things anywhere, as long as it's not so cold/damp that tins may rust. Dry goods need somewhere cool and dry, also dark I think (flour, rice, pasta, etc), but stand to be corrected. Another good idea might be large storage containers (plastic, or maybe metal if there's a chance of mice) to store dry goods in.
There are lots of useful things on this board, toughies thread, winter prep and an actual store cupboard thread - happy reading, you may be here some time! :rotfl:

MrsC I have my main dry stores in the cupboard under the stairs as cheapskate said cool and dry, tins are in the larder cupboard in the kitchen and under the bedPaper goods are in the loft.

Actually that accusation against the allotment owners echoes what is going on in America. The government are trying to stop farmer's markets, home growing of food and even collecting rain water in many states in the USA. I can't understand it either, you would think they would encourage people to do it. It's all about controlling people and prices I guess. There is talk in Greece of giving people a small piece of land so they can grow their own foods for their families if they are short of money or unemployed...as usual Greece is going the opposite way to the rest of the world. If I can find any articles about the restrictions on growing food for yourself in the states I will post them, I should have the links somewhere.

I've heard about the risks to American grow your own-ers before. I thought it was ludicrous and can't believe we could find ourselves in this situation in this country.
If it wasn't for grow your own in the 1940's... Oh, don't get me started! If they're attacking the working classes here i.e. people growing their own to get through tough times, utilising their spaces for their own survival etc then they're wrong because many, many middle earners have an interest in organic growing, especially providing safe food for their children.
The government want us to spend. I'd hate to see Cameron being in charge in a War!0 -
That's true fuddle, they want us to spend them out of this depression, and also to help their rich pals who have big estates with organic farming. I'm actually quite worried about this news as they often seem to copy America and hope this isn't a test to see if they would get away with it
If you got seed potatoes now, would they last until planting time? Anybody know? Just in case they vanish mysteriously?0 -

So please be nice. I just don't get it.
Hi, it looks as if you popped in when we were just having a bit of funall very innocent I assure you.
Anyway, for me personally it is preparing you and your family for an instance when the SHTF.
An instance might be that you live in the middle of nowhere and these a good chance that you could get snowed in. We have a Co-Op Superstore about 10 minutes walk away so the worst that could happen to us is that the co-op runs out of bread and milk. :rotfl:
Now, this is where the Preparing part comes in for me. I am currently unemployed. I knew I would be as I had a temporary seasonal job which would come to an end late September / early October. So to that end I saved (prepared) enough money to make my JSA upto £100 per week (so this gave us enough to live on) for 6 months (thats how long JSA lasts), then a further £100 per week after that. This money is ring fenced so to speak and is only touched on a weekly basis. Any spare money goes towards the further £100's
These a good chance that I can go back to the temp job next February but you never know.
I have prepared by buying almost all of the Christmas Presents whilst working, bought supermarket saving stamps whilst working and bought a years car tax as it was due in December if I'd have bought only 6 months.
Edited to add, I rambled so much I forgot the main partThe SHTF yesterday when I had a letter from the Job Centre saying that they couldn't pay me JSA  it appears these a gap in my NI contributions. Apart from the fact that there isn't *Phew* During tax year 2010 and 2011 which is where they take there figures from. I was either working full time or claim JSA with NI credit paid. I have to take my P60's and P45's in today to sort it out. I;ve had a letter from HMRC saying these a gap so I need these credits applied. The chap at the JC said that either my credits hadn't been applied or my previous employer hadn't paid correctly. Either way there isn't a gap.
So the idea being is you take what applies to you from the thread, just as you do with all of the forums.
The zombie parts AFAIK is a joke where the SHTF for all of us like an Hollywood film.
