MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »Sorry MAR....... I find that kale is very much nicer if it's either cooked with or accompanied by some sort of cured pork. I cook kale in the stock from boiling a ham/gammon and if I don't have stock I fry some bacon in a little oil before I add in the kale and cook them together. It's nice with frankfurter sausages and always more savoury if you gently soften some onion in the pan along with the bacon. It's even nicer if you have some sliced ham to go with it too!!!
Just about everything is better with cured pork of some description. (The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is tart au citron)0 -

Wasn't it one of the greats of the self-sufficiency movement, John Seymour, who wrote that the pig is the cornerstone of the peasant economy in this part of the world?
And I'm rather partial to tarte au citron myself.
On preptastic matters, I have refilled one of my big water carriers, something which happens every 3rd month. Water emptied into the bathtub so nothing was wasted, other than 5 minutes of my time refilling, if you choose to regard it like that.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Horrendous wind blowing out there today, the silver birch trees on the boundary are nearly blowing double in some of these gusts. We've moved the car a little way down the drive just in case we get tiles coming down off the roof, it's quite hard to stay upright at times and the hound was like a kite on a string, mind you he was quite enjoying it!
Just in case this wind causes problems with the electricity supply I've made sure the solar lights are charging on the window sills, I've made soup that I can easily reheat on the camping stove and located the big thermos flask so I can boil water and keep it ready for hot drinks. I've also changed my stored water and that's all fresh now. I've sat and planned a couple of meals from the store cupboard that will be one pot meals to reheat if we get power cuts and my kindle and phone are charging as I type for the same reason. No need to venture out again today I think and we're forecast even stronger winds tomorrow so as ready as we can be down here, how about all of you?0 -
We haven't got winds but horrible torrential cold rain here MrsL. Very miserable and I'm so bored I could scream!0

Don't worry MAR the weather lady said you'd be getting the winds tomorrow, you won't be bored then petal, mind you neither will we, it's supposed to be even stronger down here tomorrow, interesting times eh?0

This might interest you guys. Someone saved up relevant newpaper clippings when the Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans in WW2. They have now been digitised and are reproduced here:

It's been dry but blowing a hooley of warmish winds all day but it has finally calmed down. I, too, am charging my mobile as I don't like to let it get low, although my landline is my main telephony tool.
Am feeling like something the cat dragged in; stuffed and aching head, aching kidneys, all sorts of minor woes. Dropped off my library books and came straight home after work, too poorly for archery tonight, dammit.
The only good thing about a cold is that it's usually short-lived. I have dined on HG veg and HM chili con carne to fortify myself for slugging it out with the lurgy.
I did contemplate putting a plague-mark on the flat's door, to protect the populace (am staying well-away from neighbour's newborn for her protection) but I don't think the policical canvassers would 'get' the meaning.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
