If EMP is a worry, you might want to widen your concern, because at that point what's lighting up the skies, mean we're well and truly 'clucked'.
Have a look at the various scenarios wargamed by NATO/civil defence authorities in the 1980s; the UK's urban corridor is one of the most inviting targets in the world. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
There are other possible EMP scenarios, solar flare being at least as likely as nukes. (Unless the Ukraine thing escalates or Finland succeeds in sinking that sub).
Very true. Personally I think that solar flares are far more likely. I think that a few years ago there was a risk of the earth being hit by a Coronal Mass Ejection. The advice then was to unplug everything so that any induced currents in the transmission cables and my home could not get near devices and fry them. I think that there have been a couple of occasions globally where wide spread black outs have been triggered by solar storms. This is the only reason I would prep to specifically deal with this outcome, and isolation of items in a Faraday cage has not been worried about. My solution is to put surge protectors between all my gadgets and the mains power.
Though if there are wide spread blackouts whether man made or solar induced making sure that you have options that do not rely on electrical power will be the best way to cope. Wood or gas stoves and hand powered utensils will allow you to feed yourself adequately. For those that lived through the 3 day week will have an advantage over the rest of us.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

24 hours in the past .... bbc1 celebrities do a days work in the victorian age .... 4p for a days work and a pie costs 1p and cleaning out the street privies for 4p each.... the good old days eh.....celebrities are complaining of the smell.. poor things
I gather they did pick "tough" type celebrities to do this - well....I guess Ann Widecombe for instance isn't exactly a wimp iyswim.
Frankly...I literally couldn't manage more than a couple of days of that sort of life and I would be "outa it" end of....so credit where credit is due that someone would even try to live a life that some of us would find literally impossible and refuse to do.:T
I've often wondered just how many people in that sort of life scenario realised just how awful it was and, for those who did, and realised that the future (if a limited time span of it) would be much easier would have just said "Up with this I will not put" and that would have been that v. those who thought "Well....that's how life is and just get on with it" on the one hand or "I strongly suspect The Future will be better....but I will carry on trying to live this awful life anyway" on the other hand.
I would seriously like to know just how many people trying to live that sort of life were fully aware of just how awful it was and made a conscious decision to carry on living it. Hats off to anyone in those situations that was aware how awful their lives were and decided to carry on living them anyway - and I admire them for having the strength to do so because I know that some of us just wouldn't (including me).0 -
Were they on zero hours contracts as well?
I was in the village shop today, and it was suggested that politicians should be on zero hours contracts - so only paid for when they turn up and work (either in parliament or their constituency).
As for expenses, we reckoned those should be calculated at benefits levels - can't claim more for food (only when away from home) than would be considered the proportion allowed for it in JSA or similar.0 -
Elona (((hugs))) I feel your pain all to well :-(
This week I am exhausted both physically and mentally. I got through last week and my mothers funeral on adrenaline, diazepan and wine!!
This week I have crashed probably should have been expected but I dont know how you react to hospital stays coupled with a loss of a parent.
This weeks drama involves my mothers partner who is hell bent on causing trouble. He tried to marry her in hospital to negate any will (yes he said this to my sister!!) and then got my mother to change her will two days before she died. He is now making infamatory comments trying to get a reaction from either my sister or myself, we are ignoring him. e.g said to my sister you can look after the cottages garden its your money! I have kept a distance and total silence I have never ever liked the man and only tolerated him as he was my mothers partner. We have put his actions down to a grieving man whose world has been turned upside down; we are trying to be "nice".
Preps wise I have restocked my depleted tin stocks, refilled my decimated tea bag count ad generally just tried to get things back to normal. My freezers have never been so low but it is probably for the best as I am sure to fill them up with YS goods, fruit and veg from the garden etc
After all this stress I am going to re read my family trusts and will to make sure there are no loop holes that would prevent my wishes being carried out ( I have a son from a previous relationship). I am also going to have a look at Age UK's information re wills, probate etc as they seem very detailed.
I am going to ask the doctor to sign me sick for a couple of weeks ( i am at the moment) as I have decided to put myself first for once and have a damm good rest and ,weather permitting, plant up some of my veg patch.
The one thing I am going to beat myself up preps wise is to get off my butt and scan /save/copy all important docs; I have been putting this off as it involves paperwork!!
Keep prepping all, Elaine xx

Elaine definitely take some time. You need it for more than one reason. What a pity your mother's partner couldn't work with you during this sad period. Surely it doesn't make things comfortable for him even if he's selfish enough to not consider you and your sister.
Just breathe deeply, organise your preps and your veggie garden and wait for calm to return. Like you I have wills etc to sort out and I should do so sooner rather than later.Dor0 -
Elaine ,Thoughts to you and your family at this difficult time..
