A question for any preppers out there.
Regarding a SHTF scene where you have to protect your mobile phone from an EMP attack. If you put your phone in a metal tin, ring it and there is no call received by the phone (shows no signal until it has been out of the tin for a few secs), is that fully protected?0 -

What you want to make is a Faraday cage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage It can be made with aluminium foil and chicken wire. You could make an entire room a faraday cage if necessary, though for most people a small box with layers of insulation and foil will be enough to protect your items. Though if you are fearing EMP another trick is to turn things off as that also helps protect electronic items and unplug them. During solar storms a massive electrical storm can wipe out electronic devices if on. So just turn everything off and unplug should be sufficient for most of us. EMP needs a length of cable to induce a current and the shorter you make it the safer everything is, and the mm of cable within a phone may not be enough to do anything if the phone is off. Though making a Faraday cage is always a last resort.
Also if there is EMP then you will also need to protect all your generators as well as they will also be wiped out at least for a while. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
24 hours in the past .... bbc1 celebrities do a days work in the victorian age .... 4p for a days work and a pie costs 1p and cleaning out the street privies for 4p each.... the good old days eh.....celebrities are complaining of the smell.. poor things0

If EMP is a worry, you might want to widen your concern, because at that point what's lighting up the skies, mean we're well and truly 'clucked'.
Have a look at the various scenarios wargamed by NATO/civil defence authorities in the 1980s; the UK's urban corridor is one of the most inviting targets in the world.0 -

Not necessarily, seal the joint with conductive tape to be on the safe side - you'd need a very close fitting lid to guard against all possible frequencies, a full conductive seal ensures you're covered. If EMP is a worry, you might want to widen your concern, because at that point what's lighting up the skies, mean we're well and truly 'clucked'.

There are other possible EMP scenarios, solar flare being at least as likely as nukes. (Unless the Ukraine thing escalates or Finland succeeds in sinking that sub).0 -
Elona, I hope you get some positive news about your DH... Hugs x0
