If I remember rightly, wasn't it a lot of Asian voters who's votes were stolen?
The Proxy vote I received was for an Asian name, and the Proxy had a British name. It seemed very odd to me in view of Asians being such private people.
I vaguely recall it and thought it was the other way around - but my memory may be deceiving me on that.
It looks as if there are a number of constituencies that are that marginal and have a determined minority living in them that there may be a noticeable number of candidates elected that aren't the ones that otherwise would be. That is the potential problem if most people are voting as individuals (ie for what they personally require), but a group are voting as the group has decided.0 -

Maybe what the country really needs is political parties to face austerity. Cap political donations at £100 or £200 per person whether it is via companies, union memberships, or personal donations. Any donation that cannot be attributed to a British citizen resident here (and therefore paying tax here) is disqualified and is given to Victim Support and Legal Aid. Any sums over the cap limit will also be given to Victim support or Legal Aid. All donations are to have a NI number to verify details and so that the donor can be questioned if necessary. Also donations from all sources cannot exceed the cap either. All companies and unions must ask all shareholders or members to which party they want to donate to that quarter. This must be in writing.
Ban any other form fundraising that cannot comply with the above rules so no more £10 000 a head dinners with the PM, auctions or raffles. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
There was a time when I wouldn't have agreed with that funding comment - down to Unions giving money to the Labour Party having been okay with me. That being because, at that point, there was some chance the Unions would get their money's worth from the Labour Party.
These days - I rather doubt the Labour Party is doing anything the Unions want = why bother funding them any more then? We all expect to get what we pay for after all.....
These days - I tend to agree with you Frugal Sod.0 -
I don't think it matters very much which political party/coalition of parties is in charge after the forthcoming election. They will all have the same problems and they will only be able to do so much in any area and will probably only be around until the next election anyway. I think what we will do is business as normal, keep on making the best of what we have and providing as much for ourselves in all areas as is possible to do. Alongside that we'll keep prepping and keep a weather eye and a weather ear out for any happenings at home and abroad and do the best we can in any situation that arises, no one can do more, and we don't ask for donations!!!0

I'm going to make sure I get a new pair of sturdy waterproof winter shoes, I've already got a hefty waxed jacket,a sheepskin hat and gloves, thermal undies, socks and am looking to aquire a real sheepskin scarf for christmas this year as a combined present for everyone. I know we already have enough wood to keep us toasty through the next couple of years. I have enough candles/tealights to see us through a similar period. I have food stores for at least 6 months albeit it will be plain and will get repetetive but we will have the garden, allotment, polytunnel with overwintering fresh things to give us some flavour. I've a trusty wind up radio, solar lights and warm duvets. Whatever happens re the government I know we can make ourselves comfy, might be a bit basic, but fed, warm and weatherproof will do for us and we'll make the best of what we get, whatever that may be!0

I agree I do not think that who runs the country will make a blind bit of difference for the majority of us, life WILL get tougher and living standards will continue to fall for the vast majority. Prepping will take many of the shocks that we have to face and make them manageable.
I am wondering whether I will get my debt cleared before the next crash as I have heard that the entire Austrian banking system is facing bail-ins. Apparently they lent all across Eastern Europe in Swiss Francs as the interest rates were lower. As a result of the Swiss Franc ending its peg to the Euro it now means that many of these loans are now 40% higher in local currency terms, basically putting many into negative equity situations. So there will be a wave of defaults which will wipe out the Austrian banks and also the deposits of the Austrian people as they are bailed in.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
A tin of beans in the hand is worth more than £1 in the bank if TPTB nick your £1. Buy beans is my message or anything else useful that will make life more comfy during the next few years, only makes sense to me!0

I would add a small cash pile for dealing with day to day events and emergencies. For most of us a thousand pounds in cash will get us through any crisis and cover our shopping needs even if everything rises in price.
Anything that can be eaten drunk or smoked will have some value even just to barter with. Mini bottles of whiskey can have some trading value even if you do not drink. The alcohol could also be used as a fuel as a last resort or as an antiseptic if needed.
To be honest I do not have enough in my accounts to worry about a bail in either way. Though I would use any funds to order as much food as possible if things looked dicey. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
