Was given a lace making kit about 20 years ago so I have made a little lace - cos that is REALLY important when the SHTF!!:rotfl:
    :rotfl:
    lmao

you know what tho - I know how to make chainmaille! but only on a jewellery type level at the moment but I can byzantine and birdcage with the best of them. when my nose isnt running.

  • Nuatha, thanks for the pics & the link - I've just done a corsetry course and have happily been making corsets out of old Z-bed covers - they used some fantastic prints, and it's good tough fabric - but have now got some inspiration for some whacky & wonderful dance costumes (younger daughter & I go dancing together) which will add no end to our usefulness in a SHTF situation!

Re. Cochineal, I thought it is a ladybird because the Italian word for ladybird is coccinella. It can't be a coincidence!

It is. Kermes is another red insect dye, but native to Europe. Cochineal was originally from the Americas somewhere.

I was never allowed anything red to eat as a kid incase it had cochineal in it.. my mam thought it was squashed bugs blood that coloured the items. Probably correct somewhere in her logic

    Good Morning Preppers!

A weekend of prepping beckons, well some cleaning and a stocktake of the larder anyway. We finally emptied, defrosted, cleaned and moved the surplus freezer out of the larder, ready to take to ds and his family, who are in desperate need of it. Found a humungous black and yellow spider in there! The kind that come in on the bananas it seems! Well it now languishes in my bin after I dysoned it up! Sorry to any spider lovers out there but I really don't do spiders! :o Might try to buy my bananas singly now!

I see (on the site Keep Talking Greece) that Greece are now going to be selling expired foods in the shops. There still seems to be the usual confusion over the use by and the best before dates though! They really don't seem to be too happy about it but I think (if it is cheaper) that it makes sense just as our supermarkets decision to start selling "imperfectly" formed and sized produce is! A common sense decision at last and better than going hungry! But then again I am another of the Approved Foods site fans!;) Off to count some cous cous!:rotfl:

Just to answer your comment about the confusion on the 'best by' and 'use by' dates the answer why it confused the Greeks is simple. Our food here does not have a best by date on it, only a use by date stamped on clearly. The supermarkets like Lidl already sell ones within five days of the use by stamp at 30 percent off the usual price. Damaged goods are not sold cheaply here at all. What they are planning to do is sell goods that are out of the 'use by' date cheaply, which in some goods could be dangerous and lead to food poisoning.

Having had food poisoning so bad I almost died, I would not risk certain foods at all if they were beyond their use by date, such as meat and dairy products. I am surprised they are allowing this as there are collections at every supermarket and village to feed the people who are hungry.

Just a quick catch up before the storms hit us again. We had horrendous non stop thunder, lightning and rain from five in the afternoon yesterday till seven this morning. It took all the tv stations off and the internet so we gave up and had an early night. Both slept like logs and woke up feeling refreshed this morning. That was a miracle as the thunder sounded so loud it was like being bombed. It looks like we will be getting round two of it shortly so enjoying the internet while its still on.

Is anyone watching the new ITV series about life in Corfu? It's on ITV, I think it started on Monday ..its called '' Corfu -A tale of two islands'' I have just watched it on the catch up and I enjoyed it. Many of my friends are on the series. I avoided the camera team like the plague lol I don't want to be famous... I am afraid I can't tell you what time its on in the UK, can someone look it up for me? Thanks.

OH is much better today, I think the good night's sleep did him the world of good. Good news about his mum as well, she is much better and out of hospital after having the gall stone shattered by endoscope.

Going to have a night out at the karaoke tonight, with neither of us drinking it will be a cheap night out lol..that is if they still have electric in the storms...

Goodness I thought best before was on all foodstuff! Have you read the article? I am hopeless at links but you will find it on the "Keep talking Greece" website. I too would not risk the meat and dairy especially in a hot climate! but tinned foods and dried would surely be ok? We are still here after my Approved Foods web site orders! Which reminds me I really, really need to start on the cous cous mountain! :o Hope the storm is not so bad this time!
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I'm trying to think of the most useless craft I've learned...useless in the SHTF sense anyway. Crepe paper peg dolls? Mug painting? Embelishing felt with sweetie papers?

ETA: Ah AF cous-cous! I was just sitting here thinking about whether I should make baked potatoes to go with the baked ham tonight but no, perfect opportunity to get some of the AF cous-cous out. Thanks!
