  • After my divorce I had to move area, away from my friends, away from places I knew. I received the grand total of £11 in benefit when I first left my ex, this was 10 yeas ago & I was 51. I moved to an area that is ok, but has it's moments, lol. Such as when a neighbour set fire to his GF's car as she wouldn't answer the door to him, such as when a dealer knocked on my door by mistake as he thought I'd ordered some blow! It took me 2 years to get a secure but low paid job as I'd worked with my ex & had no work history. I took in lodgers & doggie lodgers to make ends meet, I still do 2 jobs & yes I remarried, hubby is also in a low paid job as he is partially sighted. My ex still has the 6 bed house, holidays in the Caribean & a new car every year. Hubby & I will have to downsize when we retire, but that's life, it isn't fair & it isn't just. But moaning does no good, I've had to pull myself up by my boot straps & get on with life & make the most of it. We are happy, we sit wrapped up in quilts reading, we go to bed early to keep warm, we go for walks along the river which is nearby. We make the best of what we have. I'm not whinging or whining, I'm just having a rant, lol.

Sorry to butt in but if you think you will spend £17k in six months on top of what you personally receive in benefits then you really need to sort out your spending. Don't forget this *windfall* as you put it was saved by your mother while on a pension so surely you can budget better than you seem to be doing.

Didn't say that and virtually all help stops. And I mean virtually everything. I have been told by those who advice. And the one that I may still be entitled is being scrapped, replaced and reduced. And is not guaranteed as a given.

I really was not moaning and was actually improving mentally and looking forward.

I do have some sympathy for the way the 'system' makes people feel they are being hard done by when they reach a cliff edge. And I accept it must be worrying to stop depending on the system if you are concerned that you will need it again and it might not be there when you do

But no one should let fear drive out personal integrity and dignity. The people who fought to establish a decent welfare state didn't lack those qualities
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Thanks I see your view and I don't see it has having a go:)
I was advised how to proceed and am doing all I can now because things are going to get worse and I could be in a similar situation as yourself and others and my "Windfall" will be gone in months...this has given me an idea what is coming...

We all have to try and use what we have to our own advantages...

Great that we are "Friends" I hope that we are...

    I'll leave this for now...

It may sound bad if you are not the person affected but the threshold is very, very low in the UK and it will be gone in perhaps 6 months. Also as you must know(as it happens everywhere)many people pass money amongst friends and family over many years, nothing like that is going on. Now that is questionable. But come on how many do that or would given the chance.

Some on here are too open and honest and open themselves up to be given a kicking...

You say twice in this page alone that it will be gone in months.

With regards help stopping so it should until you no longer have the means to support yourself and your savings fall back below the threshold

  • OK, here's a link for what is available in my province.

    http://humanservices.alberta.ca/disability-services/aish-faq.html

Basically a single person that is deemed disabled and unable to work recieves $1,588 a month. That is to cover rent, food, heat, light, transportation, and clothing. Prescriptions are funded.

It looks like you can have a maximum of $3000 in savings, so that's less than 2000 Sterling.

It's a hard and brutal existance. Rent in my city for a one bedroom runs around $800 for the cheapest. Add in your utilities, phone, etc. and there isn't much left over for food or going out for entertainment.

This is why there are so many foodbanks and charities that offer hot meals.

You also have to requalify annually for these funds.

I've worked with people who totally fell through the cracks and are eligible for no funding at all. During the summer they live rough along the river and forage for food and go to the missions for hot meals. Ever lived on berries and gophers? I've met men and women who have. It gets even worse for First Nations peoples who leave their Reserves and have no clue to navigate in the urban areas. I've deloused Inuits who live rough, Cree that thought it would be easy to find work with zero skills.

    I'm done.

This is why everyone and his brother wants to come here and take what they have never paid into
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
