:) Purple dye was very rare and difficult to obtain prior to the invention of aniline dyes and thus it had extremely high status. Hence imperial purple for the Roman emperor and purple stripes on the white togas of Roman aristocrats (broad stripe for senators, narrow stripe for knights, if memory serves).

Hmm birds of a feather - I am sarcastic, outspoken and opinionated too. With a smattering (sometimes more than a smattering) of builders language thrown in - though usually at the OH for comic effect :p

This made me LOL. I know you mean it sincerely and it IS fascinating but when my OH goes on about something really boring I just go "mmm interesting" in a vague kind of way :rotfl:

    Another bird of a feather!

Trust me sometimes I need some one to say shut up! *talks A LOT*

:) I'm a motormouth too; can talk the hind leg off a donkey and persuade it to go for a run afterwards. I get paid to talk to people, too; perfect job......:rotfl:

Heck, people tell me I even talk in my sleep. More interesting than snoring, I s'pose.

Nuatha, thanks for the corset pix (ooo-eer missus) wouldn't like to pick a fight with either of them. How is your OH?

  • Morning all, someone told me once I could sell snow to an Eskimo, I still wonder if that was praise or censure? Cold here today so will have my lovely dehydrator running in the kitchen drying some late courgettes which will warm it up. My bananas dried beautifully yesterday and having done nothing to them but cut them up and dry them He who knows said they were too sweet, I think they're yummy. Have a good day all, Cheers Lyn x.

You need a waistcoat ...poacher type :D

you could hide your life in there ...but it would take you a while to find some stuff

Mum & dad have waistcoats like those, from L1dl or Ald1, I think. Both keen photographers so stash lots of stuff in them, like sapre batteries, tissues, cereal bars...

The trouble with being a textile nerd is that you end up jumping up and down with rage at unexpected moments, such as when I was watching an episode of something with my brother (Merlin or Robin Hood) and they had a peasant girl in a peasant hovel in a PURPLE dress. Noooooooooo, that's sooo wrong.

Okay, enough nerdiness for this early hour. I'm limbering up with a view to allotmenteering for a couple of hours. I have the whole day to play with in theory but ME means a maximum of 2 hours energy, with breaks between time, so I have to pick my fights. I'll get there in the end.

It's not actually raining at the moment and the day looks like it might turn out nice but hasn't quite decided yet. Hope everyone has a productive and pleasant day. GQ x

The boys like to watch the Beeb's Merlin, but also want me to watch it with them, despite my mutterings of 'How many clothes has that girl got!? And that's totally wrong for that era.'

I want one of those corsets!

Re. Cochineal, I thought it is a ladybird because the Italian word for ladybird is coccinella. It can't be a coincidence!

    Good Morning Preppers!

A weekend of prepping beckons, well some cleaning and a stocktake of the larder anyway. We finally emptied, defrosted, cleaned and moved the surplus freezer out of the larder, ready to take to ds and his family, who are in desperate need of it. Found a humungous black and yellow spider in there! The kind that come in on the bananas it seems! Well it now languishes in my bin after I dysoned it up! Sorry to any spider lovers out there but I really don't do spiders! :o Might try to buy my bananas singly now!

I see (on the site Keep Talking Greece) that Greece are now going to be selling expired foods in the shops. There still seems to be the usual confusion over the use by and the best before dates though! They really don't seem to be too happy about it but I think (if it is cheaper) that it makes sense just as our supermarkets decision to start selling "imperfectly" formed and sized produce is! A common sense decision at last and better than going hungry! But then again I am another of the Approved Foods site fans!;) Off to count some cous cous!:rotfl:

  • My battle re-enactment days and yes I go from Viking to Civil War, have left me with a very interesting collection of clothes in the attic and weapons on the wall.

Lots of cooking equipment as well and an interest in historical recipes.

I've done a Viking day and a Tudor day at my son's school covering food and war.

    Both aspects went down well!

Though I was horrified to see how many children had never been exposed to "real" food and I'm not talking strange and exotic but whole roast chicken!

Once they got the idea of ripping the bird apart with their hands there was no stopping them!
