    Thriftwizard, me too!

I don't attribute any particular meaning to it. I guess it's just January (though it's not cold here for sure MrsLW!) and a feeling of tripidation before hitting a new year with angst about what it'll bring.

  • Don't give in to Doom and Gloom, try to look on a new year as a fresh and exciting new adventure and a fresh start with many opportunities to hone and refine your skills and review your preps with a fresh pair of eyes to see what you do and don't need to use up or make and buy in. It's a given chance to change things, it's a chance to improve how you do things, it's a chance to try new ways and brush up on skills and even learn 'old' ways of doing things. Keep positive, keep busy and keep going and you'll feel much better about life in general!
  • Hope you get better soon Daz.

I guess it depends on how fast you expected. :)

Depending on the size of the flame, a Hurricane Lamp should be using it at ~ 40 hours per litre, which is around 4 litres per week, running non-stop.

As a child, I remember people using a Hurricane Lamp (set at a low flame), to keep outside toilets from freezing, in the winter.
The one I'm using isn't exactly a hurricane lamp, it's one of these:

It's supposed to be a bit more fuel efficient than a hurricane lamp (although I'm not clear how that's supposed to work, if you are burning paraffin you are burning paraffin, no?) and it seems to work fine for keeping a smallish space above freezing.

One thing worth stocking up on in your prepping kit - tooth repair kits!

I had a dead tooth break just before NY (not uncommon with root filled teeth as they become fragile), and the dentist put in a temporary filling. Which fell out yesterday. So as the dentist is closed, and I'm not booked for the crown for another 10 days, I bought a tooth repair kit and finally worked out how to get it to stick (not so easy on the side of the tooth as the top).

Realistically I don't expect it to last as long as a temp filling, and of course it is the kind of thing you tend to need in an emergency. I'm off out to get a couple more (possibly different brands to test), but they appear to be zinc oxide powder and oil of cloves. I might have a chat to the dentist, as if that's all they are, buying the two separately might be a better bet, especially for families!

I love this time of year... a new start, a new page to scribble on, a new garden to sit at the fire and plan lol - my kind of gardening. Be cool and don't stress until things do go to hell. Then be too busy to stress anyway!
  • Hi all
I've been reading but not posting much recently, been doing a lot of reading and thinking.
An earlier discussion about pensions really got me thinking, do I trust the banks enough to start putting as much money away as I can for my pension or do I "future proof" by buying well made items for the house (antiques etc). I'm in the lucky position that we have paid off our mortgage but at 46 my projected retirement is over 20 years away now. My husband is older than me and already retired so I'd really like to spend more time pottering at home :D.
So I'm veering towards living simply so I don't need to work as much as well as getting the house sorted. It's an old cottage we have so everything needs done :o .
Anyhow enough rambling, hope everyone is well, and we all manage to get some sunshine to lift our spirits.

For throwing out heat, as well as light, I find Hurricane lamps very good.

Probably something to do with it having a steel top, with vents around the outside, allowing the heat to escape easily.

Sorry for being a bit of a wet blanket! Probably just the weather casting a gloom on me; it's cold & murky down here today. Off for a bracing walk now...
