Definitely not alone, Elaine241 - I woke up this morning with a fully-formed plan to inventory my "deep" food stocks and re-organise them. Never mind sorting out the dregs of the festive season - Christmas comes down over the weekend, here, once DS3 has gone off back to the warmer climes of Provence - I'm itching to get out into the garage & get cracking! I think it's to do with the sense that dawn is beginning to happen earlier, sunset's trickling back up the clock, the bulbs are beginning to show their heads down here and although there are probably a couple of months of wet, miserable stuff to get through yet, the earth is just beginning to stir again.

Happy new year to one and all

I have just caught up with the thread after being missing in action for a few days. Things have been frantic here since we got back from our break on the mainland. The ferry disaster caused a lot of fear and anxiety. Latest figures show 13 dead and almost one hundred missing, but the passenger list was not correct and they are having problems knowing exactly how many were on board. The crew have been charged with manslaughter and other offences including neglect of duty.

Then the ship with almost a thousand migrants on board was abandoned by the crew just off Corfu in terribly stormy seas. It was a miracle there wasn't another disaster! It was eventually controlled close to Italy and the migrants helped by the authorities.

This morning we heard a similar ship has been abandoned off the tip of Corfu this morning with many migrants on board. The authorities are trying to sort it out now and take them off the ship by helicopter.

Besides all this we have been going through an arctic spell of weather. It has been bitterly cold with gale force winds, and heavy snow in many other parts of Greece. I realised that the lorries with supplies may not get through Europe at all, so I went to the supermarket and got extra supplies of fresh fruit and veg. We had all the other supplies in already. We closed all the shutters and kept them closed against the cold, but it was still cold with the fire burning and the central heating on!

I stocked up on winter clothes and night wear during out break on the mainland as it is close to a ski resort. It was easy to find fleece and thermals there as they wear them most of the winter.Folks in Corfu tend to think it will be over quickly, so don't sell them in the shops. It is all part of the myth that Corfu is always sunny and warm!

We may have to go back to the UK for a few weeks soon, one of our family is very ill and a fall this week did not help the situation at all. We are waiting for news of how she is before we make the decision. There are no direct flights in the winter, so it means two flights and a very long train and taxi trip to get to where we need to be. It is also very expensive.

I appreciate the warnings about the bank runs etc, but we keep very little in euros, just enough to pay the bills. If Greece come out of the Euro we technically still owe the mortgage in Euros....but if Greece came out the Euro may fall anyway, as it has been doing since the elections were declared. Incidentally, they vote twice in the general elections here, with at least a week or two in between them. It is only the first vote that takes place on 25th January, so it could drag on for quite a while.

I wash all my cc41 and welsh blankets in the washing machine... warm wool wash. I also tumble dry the blankets... BUT I do have a large drum washing machine, AND an a very large Drum American style dryer.. especially for doing blankets ( I sell vintage clothing, bedding, linen etc)

Wash the blankets individually with nothing else in there..

Your cc41 sheets will prob out last you lol..they were so well made...

I googgled this and was wondering where you find these CC41 blankets etc- very interesting?

CC41 is the Utility Mark, which appeared on goods manufactured between 1941 and 1952 which complied with Government austerity measures - in part it was an apology that the goods may not be up to the usual standard produced by that company due to restrictions on the materials used and the need to maximise production from limited resources.

There is now a collectors market for CC41 items and dealers have some interesting ideas of value. The best sources seem to be house clearance sales and charity shops and possibly elderly relatives.

I do wonder what the material quality was like before the austerity measures were introduced.

I've been home from hospital for about a fortnight now, and fortunately pain free for a week.

However, I am now on an incredibly restricted diet. I have not eaten sugar for 25 years, as it gives me painful and disfiguring zits. This has not been a problem up to now, as of course I could make up the calories with fats. (Of course you need to be able to digest fats to do this, so I am reluctant to part with my gallbladder as the surgeon recommends.)

For the last two weeks though, I have had no butter/marg, pork, beef or lamb, and only skimmed milk. I am constantly cold & tired, and have lost 2 lbs since leaving hospital.

I have come across this website:

    http://www.sensiblehealth.com/Journey-03.xhtml

Has anyone had success with this treatment? I would be far happier if I can get my body to naturally expel the gallstones, rather than having an operation that might leave me in a worse position.

CC41/1940's textiles are now getting harder and harder to find.. if you think about it they are 65 plus years old.. so that is more or less 3 generations ago..

house clearance is now people which hoarded their stuff from the 80's generation.. IYSWIM..

my job is textiles.. so have seen the rarity of these items.. but even though these items are old, it doesn't reflect on the price of some of the old textiles..

I used to have those brown blankets, got some from my MIL, and they were hellish. Itchy scratchy and very thin. I don't see the attraction!

the quality of the material was very good, one of the reasons the cc41 standard came in, was to make sure that it wasn't used unnecessary .. like 'turn ups' on men's trousers were not allowed, as it was classed as unnecessary waste of material..
also if I remember rightly.. a Maximum of 5 buttons were aloud to be used on items..

CC41 shoes, had to be sturdy and strong.. to last.. nothing fancy..

Same as the CC41 furniture, had to be a certain basic standard. with no fancy add on its.. up until a few years ago, utility furniture didn't sell, you could pick it up for more or less pennies, loads were burnt, but now its in high demand...
