It isn't a crisis yet kittie and I doubt it will become one. At small numbers (up to a few hundred cases I would guess) there will be regular hospital isolation beds available. Once those numbers are exceeded there would need to be emergency measures to isolate cases and they wouldn't get the same level of medical care but don't underestimate the differences in infrastructure capacity. I was reading that one reason the west African countries have such poor infrastructure is that the conditions of IMF loans made to them discouraged centralised health systems - poor forward planning in the interests of short term corporate profit I expect.0

Daz am sure you can do things to ease gout - maybe google?0

I've been home from hospital for about a fortnight now, and fortunately pain free for a week.
However, I am now on an incredibly restricted diet. I have not eaten sugar for 25 years, as it gives me painful and disfiguring zits. This has not been a problem up to now, as of course I could make up the calories with fats. (Of course you need to be able to digest fats to do this, so I am reluctant to part with my gallbladder as the surgeon recommends.)
For the last two weeks though, I have had no butter/marg, pork, beef or lamb, and only skimmed milk. I am constantly cold & tired, and have lost 2 lbs since leaving hospital.
I have come across this website:

Has anyone had success with this treatment? I would be far happier if I can get my body to naturally expel the gallstones, rather than having an operation that might leave me in a worse position.

I wonder if one of these natural remedies may be useful to you Daz - apple cider vinegar looks to be the most popular. I hope the pain isn't too bad...and you recover soon!

Daz I didn't know what zapain was but googling it's a mixture of paracetamol and codeine, so a good painkiller, but for gout you also need something anti-inflammatory like brufen.
A cold and frosty morning out there, I'm experimenting with a paraffin lamp as a source of heat, it seems to be getting through the paraffin faster than I expected. Worth finding these things our now rather than in an emergency0 -

Same here.it seems to be getting through the paraffin faster than I expected.
I guess it depends on how fast you expected.
Depending on the size of the flame, a Hurricane Lamp should be using it at ~ 40 hours per litre, which is around 4 litres per week, running non-stop.
As a child, I remember people using a Hurricane Lamp (set at a low flame), to keep outside toilets from freezing, in the winter.0 -
Having a moment of cold grue/existential angst here... over the last few days, I keep feeling that there's something nasty hanging over us. I can't think of any actual reason why I should; my own life seems to be getting back on track fairly normally after the festive hiatus, and although one of my family is terminally ill & won't be with us much longer, that's not a matter of dread but a merciful release. All a bit weird; I expect it'll pass off in a day or two without anything happening! But I've learnt to pay attention to these feelings, without going overboard; perhaps my subconscious has picked up some kind of clue that my conscious mind's ignoring?Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

It's Jaunaryitis THRIFTWIZARD, you'll feel more positive as the days grow longer and the light levels increase. I hate this time of year with a vengeance it's bleak, grey and spirit sapping but I know the spring will come soon and the bulbs here are beginning to pop little green noses up above the grass and there are catkins out and dangling on the footpaths along with fat little green leaf buds on the bushes, it won't be long coming and will be very welcome, won't it?0

If it is any comfort at all I have exactly the same feeling . I have had it for a few days now. I am paying attention to it but not worrying about it. The chances are that if something does happen I would not have been able to stop it happening, even if I knew about it in advance.
Just don't go reading the doom sayers on Facebook and You tube like I did.....:rotfl:0
