Though they would not be able to eliminate voter fraud. Though voter fraud is a grossly over claimed event.

I think that the election papers are handed to historians in 100 years when you would be dead anyway so who would worry about who you voted for? So I would be happy to keep the current system.

They keep the polling slips for 100 years? Cripe!

Then I really do have cause to worry. Can you imagine the Nazis having that sort of information to look at?

So disposal appears to be after a year and a day. Though there are widespread rumours of names being matched against votes for at least the "fringe" parties. And given current tech and the ability to scan large quantities of paper in a very short time then it is technically feasible to record every vote.
  • Actually, I don't like the idea of them potentially being able to identify our votes. I very much doubt that terrorists are going to conveniently identify themselves by voting for outlandish & bizarre candidates, if for no other reason than because outlandish & bizarre candidates can't actually afford to stand any more; I suspect the terror-minded don't see any point in voting at all. So why would "they" need to be able to know which way I'm voting? I don't mind them knowing that I have exercised my franchise, but actually being able to identify my vote sends a cold shiver down my spine.

The comments to that Guardian article are very interesting. Particularly the last one about the prisoners sorting the votes. Guess I was right to be suspicious.

I found it very interesting that the Falklands referendum had no identifying marks on the ballot papers to ensure there was no way of identifying who had voted for or against British rule.
I wouldn't worry about prisoners sorting votes, these days I'd do it by computer and it wouldn't take long to know who'd voted what. Given current data warehousing techniques you could probably work out the why as well.

You are right those that are terror inclined will probably not vote at all. They would prefer the bullet over the ballot.

As for voting for non mainstream political parties I will probably give the mainstream parties one last chance then it will be fringe parties from then on. The mainstream parties have all abandoned the average person. They are all beholden to a few very rich backers and it is the policies of the very rich that they support. Even labour have abandoned their working class supporters and get a lot of their money from millionaires. That was why the BNP did well for a time under Labour. Fringe parties only do well when the mainstream parties fail and ignore the masses. All across Europe mainstream parties are crumbling in support because they are telling the electorate that "There Is No Alternative" to austerity. Whether mainstream parties will survive long term is another matter.

Daz has highlighted a gap in my preps. I do need to get more tinned items. Most of mine are in the unprocessed form of flour and rice etc. So I have several months supply for bread etc. In addition I do have lots of tinned tomatoes and coconut milk which I do need to use up before replacing. I will also turn over a couple of food storage barrels to dried items that will be of use.

Also I hope that you rent does not rise after the transfer of ownership.
