Thanks, all, really appreciate your support. Our terrific solicitor has composed a suitably scathing letter, so I do feel a bit better, and I seem to have inadvertently shopped on Ebeast in an attempt to de-stress ... it's a winter rug for our horse, so not exactly an extravagant fashion item (though I'm sure she will look lovely and cosy in it)! xx

RAS this is the update from the Scots weather forums

"A final tally on the rainfall at the Summit of Meall a' Bhuiridh at Glencoe, by the time the frontal rain finally cleared this morning a total of 402mm of rainfall had been recorded since it started on Saturday evening. That's just shy of 16 inches of rain in 60 hours"

Oh my word - I hope you can swim! I've biked through Glencoe in the rain, long ago, but nothing like that...

Wishing you a competent & sensible judge, The Cake...

I'm sure most of you guys pay by cash in shops in order to keep prying eyes away from what you are buying.

There are a number of news items today concerning the possibility of power cuts this winter. Seeing a photo on BBC news of a shop in a 1977 power cut reminded me of another good reason to carry cash:

Of course, if the shop you are in has a power cut, they likely won't let you take your shopping unless you can pay them in pound notes, as the chip & pin machines won't work.

In 1977 we actually still did have pound notes, and they were a lot nicer to carry than being weighed down with coins. I occasionally go shopping with a couple of £20 bags of £1 coins and really wish they were in paper format.

Saw my DD the other day, she and her fiance moved into their first house a year ago and she said when she does her fortnightly online shop she adds a couple of extra tins here and there, soup or veg, as a backup... he said (affectionately), "You're like your mum, prepping for an apocalypse that'll never happen in this day and age"! We had a conversation about keeping at least half a tank of petrol in each car and even a small amount of cash accessible for the - to them - unimaginable event that there is no 'online' access to anything, not just social media but the money in their own bank accounts.

I think because stores rely heavily on electricity, many will struggle to take any transaction during a cut. Having cash is no guarantee as we found out late last year in a power cut in Lidl. The tills were down so no buying at all, for anyone. The store was closed until electricity was back on.

Hopefully stores will be thinking about losing money this winter and work out some sort of contingency plan to enable trading. Something tells me though "I doubt it".

I imagine the smaller independent stores would be more willing to take cash and give a written receipt for goods, but that would depend on if they have any emergency lighting.
