:)seigemode, my weakness is also books. I don't buy them new, they are from the chazzers (mostly sub- £1) or the library, but books have always been a source of deep joy to me.

Other than that, there's not a lot bar my fondness for practical stuff. Imagine Mum and me, both practically-minded women, almost drooling at the prospect of going to
, the local independant hardware store near here. Tis a palace of many delights and a place where money can leak from your pockets at a rate of knots. Fashion, cosmetics, s0dding handbags, you can stuff them, but a good old-fashioned hardware store is my idea blissful shopping experience.

Part of my extended family have been living in northern Europe since the first decade of the twentieth century. On their annual trips over, they used to stock up on things which were cheaper in the UK; shoes, household linens and knitting yarn, as I recall. On our trips over there we used to stock up on washing powder and fine chocolate.:rotfl:

OK, the chocolate wasn't cheaper but it was very fine.

Overall, what tempts me isn't the bright and shiny, but the practical, well-made item which looks like it would see me out. Oh, and baskets, I have a constitutional weakness for baskets, particularly red willow baskets. It's a good job you can hide preps in them, isn't it?
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Books are also a weakness of mine. Though I do try and buy new to support the author, being one myself.

Though all mine are non fiction and so very useful in one way or another.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

Out of interest does anyone else have any weaknesses when it comes to consumerism ?

Barely used old items on eBay. Last month I got two Belling bed warmers for £6 plus postage!

As you can see, they just needed new cables. This cost more than the warmers, but now they are perfect.

By the way folks, these are brilliant for warming up a chilly bed. Put them in at the top a couple of hours before bed, then move them down before you brush your teeth.

I have to wash my blankets fortnightly due to allergies, so an electric blanket would be impractical.

I am vain and shallow and can't walk past a display of pretty coloured nail varnishes :o At least it's a fairly cheap weakness!

  • Books are the one thing I can't resist either. Although I don't buy new any more. Car boot sales, charity shops, second-hand via 'booksprice' (the only book comparison site I've found for second-hand books), and of course free eBooks via Amazon and Project Guttenberg. My best find though has been author's official websites - I've got loads of free short stories recently by author's I really like.
