I don't normally look at the daily papers etc, I only listen to the news, and pick up bits on this thread... but when I was in the supermarket the front of the daily express caught my eye... as I mentioned in a previous post, I have been worried about the terrorists starting to cause mayhem here.. so its either a real threat, or the papers are scaremongering again...But as you have said, be very aware, and look for escape routes wherever you go...

I have got an army bullet/or stab proof gillet that came into work, might aquire that for my prep stash, even though it might seem a bit OTT lol..

Looking for escape routes is common sense - it applies to lots of possible scenarios from fires to football crowds.

We've lived with the threat of terrorist activity on the British mainland for a long time, in the 70s, 80s and 90s it was the IRA, in 2000-2002 it was the Real IRA. After a couple of "peaceful" years we had the 7th July 2005 London bombings and a number of Islamic terrorist incidents since.

We're at least as likely to be caught up in non terrorist incidents. Going to the theatre and having the ceiling cave in was hopefully a one off event, but car and train crashes can cause widespread disruption.

Many years back I got caught by crowd moving the opposite direction to the way I'd planned. The crowd surge carried me nearly 500 yards - I'm a fairly hefty bloke and was seriously fit in those days, there was nothing I could do about it. Knowing the area allowed me to get back to where I'd intended avoiding the crowds. If anyone had told me I was in danger of being swept off my feet by a bunch of people shopping I wouldn't have believed them.

Things happen around us over which we have no control, being aware of our surroundings is a useful tool - whether its finding the loo, a few minutes peace and quiet or a way out.

I think most of us on here will be salivating at the thought of getting our hands on a stab proof/bullet proof vest LOL

I am very interested in reading about the volcanic activity and I am watching all the reports on the earthquakes around the world. Greece is an earthquake active area of course, and it has certainly felt earth quaky for a few months now. We have only had minor rumbles so far but I am wondering if one could be on the cards for us soon.

I managed to get the keyboard sorted by taking the battery out then putting it back. This morning I realised one of the problem causers is the automatic update....it is trying to update in the morning when I turn it on and it is not online then. They are assuming everyone has 24/7 internet, which is not the case, of course (we should be so lucky!)

I can't set it to update at a certain time when I am online so the only solution I have come up with so far is to set it so that it has to ask me if it can download and install. That way I would have to be online to be asked, and it would be online to download when I say yes. Oh for going back to a simple life again......

I have not had a mobile phone for over nine months, I gave them up as I hate them......they make normal folks turn into non thinking non talking zombies...often in company! But my husband has been following all the things going on at the moment and asked me to carry one for emergencies only. I was given a new sym card today at the phone shop and got 400 mins of free calls within Greece. I am going to use it only in emergencies and to keep in touch with my other half ( we are often out driving in different directions!). Since no one knows the number except him I should get no other :T

Hope you all manage to stay dry and warm in the bad weather that is forecast for some of you. Have a lovely day xxxx

LOL 2Tonsils you may find you do get calls from sundry strangers - the mobile phone companies recycle numbers. If you don't use your phone for a certain period (varies between networks) they assume the number is dead and they can reissue it. So if you want to keep the phone for emergencies only make a note to make a single phone call at whatever interval you need. My sister never uses her phone but once a month she gets it out and calls her own landline. That keeps it current
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I'm finding it very interesting how many, if not most, people don't seem to see the potential for major trouble in certain situations. I'm getting a lot of flak for checking the Icelandic situation every now & then, along the lines of, "What the heck are you doing that for? We're not flying anywhere anytime soon!" as if cancelled flights were the only possible repercussion...

Let's hope it doesn't even come to that, but it doesn't take a lot of historical knowledge to see that that's only an annoyance compared to some possible outcomes of a major Icelandic earthquake swarm. However, I'm only too aware that anticipating trouble that doesn't happen is also a major pitfall; I have a friend who often went hungry when she was young, because her mother had seen no point in going out & buying any food, "because Jesus is coming back any moment, you silly child!" She's still waiting; maybe the Last Trump will blow in the next half hour, but then again, maybe it won't!

ETA: no wish to offend anyone, up above, please don't take it as such - just an illustration of how easy it is for worry/anticipation to get out of hand!

Well there are many potential threats and sundry problems but I do not feel threatened by any of them. At the moment the only way a volcano will disrupt my life is if the ash cloud is immense and causes crop failures. I am not travelling anywhere so that aspect will not impact me.

Oh to get a stab proof vest! Though I have survived long enough so far without one and prevention is a lot cheaper than a nice stab proof vest. How many of us unless we are in the police have ever really needed one?

:) Hey, look what I found - how to open cans without can-openers (or any other tools) http://knowledgeweighsnothing.com/how-to-open-a-can-with-no-can-opener-or-tools/

Am dying to give this one a go but will pass for now and try later on. I might punt a tuna can against the concrete slabs on the allotment and give re resultant fish to the mogs. Saw one of them hunting today and it pounced into the grass and had a rat, easy as pie.

Have been gardening today in first showery rain then pertiddling rain but I still got stuff done and have added to my collection of brick-bats, rusty nails, glass and pottery fragments, random bits of plastic and misc. Haven't found anything amusing but did dig up a small toad.

I have dug up a small toad on Saturday, Sunday and today, in approximately the same area of the allotment. I really hope it's not been the same one on all three occasions or it's not having a very good Bank Holiday weekend, bless it.:rotfl:

Well maybe your cats will bring you fresh rats?

As for the can opening that looks pretty useful, though being Russians, I thought that they would be opening the cans with an AK47.
