If you are prepper, shouldn't you have two or three packets in hand?

Ooooh, lovely, a rainy day! Apart from a swift trip to tidy up my stalls after the weekend, it's dedicated to preserving. Knowing a storm was coming & any ripe blackberries would just rot in situ, I trotted off yesterday afternoon & came home with 2.2kg of blackberries and another kilo of crab apples; today's projects are to start off some blackberry vinegar (marvellous for coughs & sore throats) & some blackberry & crab apple jelly, bottle up my kimchi and make up some ginger beer from the "plant" I've been nurturing all week.

Sorry to hear that, Alibobsy, but I know colleges often have spare places on courses so I am sure he'll be fine.

Thanks, in the end they have put him on the level 2 IT betec instead of the level 3, but he will redo his english at the same time. If at the end of the year he improves the english from a d to a c he can go onto the level 3 betec and will have an extra year at college, if not he will do the second year on the level 2 anyway.

So at least he is doing something till 18 anyway lol. He hated school since the first day he was there and all our parents evenings have had the same theme ie. cleverest in class but only works when he feels like it and tries to coast by.

He really doesn't fancy uni and as OH is in IT thats what he wants to do. OH thinks instead of uni he might be better with him helping him study to pass his microsoft certification like OH has. It will cost us money but be cheaper than 3 years at uni and give him an industry valued qualification.

We will see, just didn't want him stuck at 16 with nothing to do.

Our eldest was very similar, Ali - never got the hang of actually doing any work at school and did the least possible. He scraped along the bottom, just managed 3 low-grade "A" levels and then opted for college rather than uni, which was still possible 8 years ago. When he got to college, he absolutely flew; the different style of learning & atmosphere suited him much better, and he went on to uni after gaining a top-marks BTEC; which meant he only had to do two years for a full degree. He's doing extremely well in his chosen field now :) so traditional academic qualifications are not the be-all & end-all that our schools like to present them as.

wild boar is delicious we get it here in the winter.it is hunted in the forests on the mainland

There is a place near us called a "wild boar park", where they have the boars in fenced off woodland, but you can see the nursing mothers and they also have other animals for the kids to see and feed-llamas, donkeys, ducks, geese, lambs, chicks etc etc. Loads of lovely walks and you can take a crazy almost vertical ride on trailer pulled by a big landy up the hill and wander your way back down the long way through trees, long grass etc. kids love it. Quite cheap to get in and they have a shop (can go to the shop for free as well lol) where they sell their own produce including wild boar sausages and burger as well as various joints mmmm.

Having always had an interest in science and wanting to understand how things work I have been interested in volcanos and plate techtonics. So I am finding the current events in Iceland pretty fascinating. But keep reminding myself to hope no one is actually effected by events, or at least nothing more than some inconvience.

Regarding the extinct volcanos in the UK they are from a time millions of years ago when the UK sat in a different place on the globe. Currently we do not sit over any major plate margins nor are we on a "hot spot" so we won't be seeing any lava flows here any time soon :)

Unfortunately for the Icelandic they sit both on a major plate fault line and a hot spot so the whole island is very active.

We talk about individual volcanos but they are actually sat along rifting fissues. The systems work both ways, so the volcanos themselves can erupt or whole rifts can open between the volcanos as with the so called Laki eruption.

Given the magma movements so far most observers believe it is almost impossible that some kind of eruption will not occur. Currently the magma has been moving from the BB caldera and a rift appears to be filling with rising magma moving from there to the next large volcano Askja. At current speeds it is estimated to reach there in about 3-4 days. There is a fair chance a large rift could open and things will be pretty spectactular.

However you have to remember the high numbers effected by the "laki" event in the past was in a period where people were often not well fed or that healthy and food crops were grown in the country so crop failures could be a big thing.

Great article here http://volcanocafe.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bardarbunga-nature-of-the-beast/ which covers what could happen and the last paragraph sums it up best.

"Above I have touched on the worst case scenario. If that happens we will face temperature changes, ash and voluminous gas clouds. But one thing is certain, it would not in any way threaten life on earth, it would not even put a big hindrance on your daily life. Get real, the world will not end like this. But, expect a bit of nuisance."

So maybe worth stocking up on food stuffs as prices will rise if harvests are down and try to avoid flying this year lol.

Mind you seems to be alot of earthquakes around at the mo outside iceland with Calaforinia and now Peru suffering like the Earth is being a bit on the grumpy side ;)
