    Same here.

Absolutely lashing down, and high winds. :(

Now, as you guys know, I always buy Imperial Leather Soap.

However, sometimes I find a bar dries out and is difficult to lather, particularly when it's getting small. Other times, the bar sits in a soggy mess of liquifying soap on the side of the basin.

Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? :)

Best place for Gortex has to be Army/Navy or Ebay.
Granted your limited to camo or the odd dark navy blue thing, but most of my winter clothing is Ex forces!

Got trousers and jacket for about £35 in as new condition!

I have a 20 year old pair of leather Brasher boots, still in very good nick. So much better than hi tech materials for staying the distance - quite literally!

I have a Berghaus Goretex 3 in 1 jacket which I have rewaterproofed a couple of times and fortunately you can replace the fleece easily as it just zips in. But when all is said and done, I'm not convinced that it's that much better than my old waxed jacket. And you can get those quite cheaply from school outfitters if you don't care about having an authentic brand. Plus as I get older I'm trying to steer away from anything that involves petrochemicals, under which very broad heading I include anything that makes me cough. The spray to rewaterproof the Berghaus comes under that heading!. Wax doesn't. And Goretex itself is not necessarily free from doubt
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Some of the high wind and torrential rain could continue into tomorrow. France and Germany currently have horrendous storms hitting them due to the after effects of Bertha. I have been looking at the pictures and videos online. It is so strange how one place can be hit bad and just down the road they have sunshine.

Your comments on the waterproofs are really helpful to me. I am considering buying some to keep in my scooter this winter in case I get caught out in one of our sudden downpours. Lidl had some decent ones last year, along with some really good thermals that I bought (supposed to be for skiing lol). Fortunately I packed them away when I went to Thailand, instead of giving them away. I have a feeling I am going to need them this year. Corfu gets very cold and wet in the winter months, contrary to what everyone seems to think.

If I need a new pair of boots, they'll be Brashers then. Though I'm hoping the Scarpas might see me out.
I've found wax cotton to be heavier than I want to carry on British hills - but they certainly do the job.
Thinking back to what kit I started with - a string vest style t-shirt, a lambswool poloneck sweater, and a lanolined wool shirt. A Ventile jacket, treated cotton, provided a windproof/showerproof layer and PU waterproofs for foul weather (which could get you as wet from sweating as not wearing them in rain could).
I was a fairly early adopter of Goretex, though the early gear did not have a good working life.
You can get decent quality Goretex kit from EBay and the like, some of it produced for military use, some for commercial civilian use (I had a bright orange Goretex coat produced for BT as part of my car kit for many years).
I don't do the serious backpacking and mountain walking that I used to and I'm tempted to follow MaryB's example and move back to natural materials - my wax cotton stockman's coat is near enough a one man marquee and certainly keeps the weather out.

:) Hi daz, know what you mean about the Gortex jackets, enough to give a body heart failure, hey?

I did pick up a Goretex jacket for £30 in the menswear section of TK Maximus a few years ago, when they're flogging off ski wear is a good time to look. It's technically a ski jacket, so shortish, but who cares? I'd keep an eye on TK if you have one, Goretex jackets turn up from time to time, often in the £60 bracket. Mine had been reduced several times because it's bright red and the blokes obs weren't keen on the colour. :)

I also have a 'Berghaus' brand waterproof shell jacket from Goo Oootdoors which is coming up to 3 years old and has never let me down. I bought a man's one so that it'd be large enough for me to layer up underneath for the cold weather and it's also light enough to stuff in a bag for those intermediate days when it may chuck it down or not. I've been very satisfied with it and it's stood up to some truly foul weather without leaking or getting clammy (as in being outisde all day in pelting rain).

Today seems to be freshened and rinsed by yesterday's exciting weather, which comprised a string of rambunctious rain-storms, some with thunder, some without. It kept getting nearly dark in the middle of the day. Glad to see I should be able to make it up to the office without full waterproofs.
