  • DD1 who is the real outdoor nut in the family says that she often uses 4 different online sites for big discounts on outdoor clothing and equipment for expeditions. outdoormegastore.co.uk , fieldandtrek.co.uk , outdoorkit.co.uk and outdoorworlddirect.co.uk . All of them tend to sell stock that is a couple of seasons old i.e. it might be the design from 2 years ago, but they often have HUGE discounts of up to 90% if you strike lucky. As an example, she bought a 3 season sleeping bag for the recent trip to Zambia - it was a KHYAM 800 ultralight which normally retails at £95 and for which she paid £27. She has had other bargains too.

You would probably need to go to a country store or similar to find your size in a particular brand, but if you aren't bothered by the fact that it is an old design (and she looked baffled and said "why would you be if it keeps you dry?") then there are some real bargains to be had.

Lyn, thanks for those links, have them bookmarked now for a slow spell later today! :D

The windy weather we've had last night and today has reminded me how draughty some windows and doors are in this house - good job it's not cold yet. It has freshened up the air, and although it's very windy, it's beautifully sunny. :)

Re boots - I have some heavy walking boots, the rigid type, bought in a sale in the local outdoorsy shop, a little heavy but ok. They're even good in very wet weather but take a while for the surface to dry out. I've just bought myself some new leather winter boots, last pair died in May, so thought there was no chance of a bargain, but a nearby outlet village has a Hu$h Pupp!es store and I got some down from £70 to £49, not a massive discount, but they will last me years. The pair that just died were £30 in Cl@rks sale, down from £60, and lasted 10 years so hoping for about the same! :)

I have an ancient orange Reg@tta jacket, must be 17 years old at least, cuffs slightly tatty, but a staunch ally in spring/autumn weather.

    A xo

Have been to the gym after checking it was open..today seems to be a Holy day and it is up to the shops to decide if they want to close or not...the shops seemed to be open, the banks and government offices closed. We have another Holy day when they all close on Friday.

I went to the gym and decided I needed a couple of pairs of training trousers to allow for washing and drying etc. I went to an ex catalogue shop that sells seconds, which used to be cheap. Blimey, the prices had tripled since last time I was in, so I walked out again after complaining. No wonder they had no customers...

I then went down the road and got two pairs for ten euros, not only better quality but made of 100 percent cotton as well. It makes you wonder.....

Planning on cooking some gluten free buns for the freezer later on, need to keep my stocks up. Just indulging in some gf toast with melted cheese and a gf cup of soup. Have a lovely day folks xxx

This comment to this post about Mervyn King made me chuckle:

Also worth remembering go outdoors price match and beat by 10%. I got a down sleeping bag they sell for £99 at a reduced £74 as I found it cheaper else where. You can either do it online or instore.

:) Hi, I think this is the same way that they rate waterproofiness in tents (I just made that word up).

3000 would possibly be 3000 'hydrostatic head' which would be a pretty decent tent although not as kick-arris as the 5000 HH backpacking tent I own, which stands up to all the rain you can throw at it. Got this from a wiki on tents:

Rain resistance is measured and expressed as hydrostatic head in millimetres (mm). This indicates the pressure of water needed to penetrate a fabric. Heavy or wind-driven rain has a higher pressure than light rain. Standing on a groundsheet increases the pressure on any water underneath. Fabric with a hydrostatic head rating of 1000 mm or less is best regarded as shower resistant, with 1500 mm being usually suitable for summer camping. Tents for year-round use generally have at least 2000 mm; expedition tents intended for extreme conditions are often rated at 3000 mm. Where quoted, groundsheets may be rated for 5000 mm or more.

Hope that's of some assistance. Just checked the spec of my tent and fell about laughing again at the thought that it's actually considered a 2 person tent. Yeah, right, assuming that 'both' of you are actually as fleshless as a skellington and don't mind jumbling your bones together in the same sleeping bag, that might just be do-able.

:D We are the MSE Borg Brain. If one of us doesn't know, you can bet your aspidistra someone on here does.

Actually, re-reading the spec of my tent, with its 6000 HH groundsheet, explains how I was able to sleep peacefully through a rainstorm which ended up with me in a 2 inch deep puddle (outside my tent, puddle wasn't there when I pitched it) and still be very nicely dry.

Does anyone know the mysterious significance of June 2016? I ask because I have been buying Nostia brand passata cartons from Liddly for several months and they all have a BB of June 2016. Is the world scheduled to suffer a major mishap in that month, which will make passata-hoarding obsolete? I think we should be told.
