If we have a long slow decline (I tend to lean towards this happening), there will be time for people to adjust and deal with the changes a post oil world will produce.

The problem is if the change is more drastic and you end up with groups of people who simply don't want to let go of the world they currently live in and things get violent.

I suppose all we can do is try our best to prep, and maybe the best thing we can do is to be aware that things will be changing and be willing to deal and adapt to the new world we will get.

I agree that things will be gradual. Look at the fact that in the US wages have been stagnant for 40 years and I feel that is going to happen here. We already have had stagnant wages for most since 2003 so we are already part of the way towards the revolution but it is still a long way off.

It was the failure for things to improve that triggered the Arab spring and Ukraine uprisings. So I fully expect things to deteriorate for some time before we start seeing serious unrest. So I think we have time to prepare for anything, as long as you appreciate that live will not improve for most of us no matter who is in power.

well, the SHTF fan for me unexpectedly on this forum. This is 2Tonsils and I have had to set up a new profile to get back on here to post. My computer re booted and lost my sign in details. I could not get the site to send me my old password and I could not get it to accept the correct numbers shown on the photo for the spam checker. I have been trying for the last couple of days. In desperation I have re registered on the site as 1Tonsil till I can get my old details to work.

I went back to the gym to strengthen my shoulder and increase my fitness. The owner of the gym where I used to go offered me three months for 109 euros which is a bargain as it includes all classes as well. I have taken them up on the offer. It strikes me that if this winter is as bad as I expect I am going to be moving and stacking wood, cutting sticks and moving gas bottles around, so I need to be fitter to cope with it.

The heavy rain storms and wind that has been hitting parts of the Uk today is not part of the remains of Bertha. That is expected to hit on Sunday. Here is the latest update I have :Lee Barrett's Weather Forecasts
    ·
The answer to the question a few days ago is YES the remnants of hurricane Bertha are forecasted to slam into the UK by Sunday were very heavy rain & winds of 50-70mph will hit the country with large waves and also flooding. That's ur update for now another update tomorrow and please like & share thankyou everyone

I hope you are all prepared just in case for this one. I don't think they know exactly where it will hit till a few hours before it does. Do hope you all have a happy, safe weekend.xxx I have enjoyed reading the chat on here even though I have not been able to post.

:) Hi 1 or2tonsil. Glad to have you back.

Thought you'd lost me, too, as MSE took itself away mid-afternoon and gave me a 'timeout' message, then wouldn't re-load, then I switched from Firefox to IE8 and could load the site, logged on, ticked 'remember me' and then found I could read, but not 'thanks button' any post and it kept logging me out.

As I kept getting that irritating purple banner about cookies, went into my settings on the pooter and unblocked all cookies (only down to medium high from high) and now she works and I'm back on my preferred browser, Firefox.

Dunno what's happening with the site, but glad to be back with y'all, was getting withdrawal symptoms. Tragic, innit? :rotfl:

Been hunting YS bargains and also got another 2 x 2 litre bottles of water whislt I was out. 34p is cheap for a bit more peace of mind. Humidity is terrible, it has been nearly dark for a couple of hours and am expecting storms tonight.

:o Glad it wasn't just me. A poster on the end of another OS thread (ampersand) wrote something about problems with the site. The horror of being parted from my MSE fix.

I would recommend a password manager of some kind. I use 1Password primarily because I have hundreds of passwords and if I used any for more than one service then it could get very messy. It is also great for syncing across devices and so I keep copies of my passwords on my iPhone and iPad. They are all hidden behind a password so are not accessible to any one who might find my devices. I also use long randomly generated passwords so that if any site is compromised the passwords are different from any other site that I might use. It also has a vulnerability feature that warns about how vulnerable each password is when you last changed it and if it could have been compromised by the heartbleed bug.

Yes, it just goes to show how much we would suffer if we lost all internet contact in an emergency situation and were desperate for news of what was happening.

Someone was talking about bottles of water, I was just wondering if there is any advantage in having a small stash of soda or sparkling water? Could it have any advantages over normal water? I already have containers full of normal spring water but I can get sparkling water very cheap here.

I am increasing my stocks of herbs that can be used for cooking and medicinal uses, as well as my stash of essential oils. They are easy to store and take up very little space.

Just watching the reports of flooding in the UK on facebook, it sounds awful in some places so I hope you are all cosied up in a nice dry house reading lots of prepping books or watching you tube specials on how to survive.

Thanks for that Frugalsod, I will investigate that tomorrow. Off to watch a zombie/alien movie on Greek tv, complete with subtitles in Greek (but it is in English )

Just one last warning...although Bertha is expected to hit the Uk on Sunday, there is a huge wave of bad storms currently hitting France which could impact the UK, especially the south of the country if they move north. I have just seen them on the real time lightning map.....and have sent them on to the forecasters as no one is mentioning them yet.

Soda water as it contains carbon dioxide is slightly acidic, so it will contain small quantities of carbonic acid. That might actually be useful in terms of keeping it sterile, it will not be infallible as it is a weak acid.
