  • If there are memberships still available for grabs could the lurcher and I join please? He's very good at chasing squizzles and I'm very good at cookouts in the garden (could combine skills if anyone would be brave enough to eat the result!) also very good with small tortoises though that is not a skill much in demand (unless you are a small tortoise I suppose). Will accept any membership no matter how humble Cheers Lyn and him xxx.

The down side to having stores, moving them from one room to another as house is being changed round. On the plus side now starting with an empty room ( well will be eventually) so can lay it out better as room I was set up as a study not store room on down side rather a lot of tins, packets, bottles, jars, camping stuff etc., etc...........at least they are staying on the same floor, even so I think it would be easier to move a normal houseful than this one room:rotfl:

I'd love to join too - can offer the skills of getting almost any old sewing machine up & running, and making useful stuff out of the things that everyone else is throwing away (quilted hot water bottle covers from old tablecloths, anyone?!) and also fermenting - wine, cider, kombucha, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, sourdough - you name it, it's sitting in my fridge or over my boiler, burping gently on the shelf in the loo, or in a glass or on a plate on the table!

    its £1.90 now :(

That was quick! Having read it while waiting for DS2 to get dressed for school and then at the bus stop as he'd taken so long, it was too late to walk to school (grr!) it's a good little book, but not I suspect worth paying for if you've already started to make stores. Basically, the ideas are:
have plenty of water; be aware of the different storage times of food; don't forget medicines; be hygenic when packing food for storage; label and rotate to always use the oldest stuff first.

I'm still grateful to D&DD for the link though!

My mum used to make kombucha though she hasn't done it for ages...

If any of you are seriously worried about some major disruption to normal life, I would suggest that rather than stockpiling a few months supply of chopped tomatoes, why not invest the money spent on stockpiling on a course such as self sufficiency/bushcraft/foraging etc.

In a disaster those with the practical skills to live are the ones who will survive. Those with a well stocked larder and no practical skills will not in the long run.

    Hi
I've been lurking, but just thought I'd mention the Mayan calendar predicts it will end on 21st Dec, not 22nd - didn't want you guys to miss it, so to speak by thinking you had a day longer than you did ;-)
  • Already done it KAREN - and jolly useful it is too, but I'm still stockpiling tomatoes, I like tomatoes!!!!! Cheers Lyn.
