OK, not quite an island but fairly remote and a bit warmer than both Scotland and N. Ireland: Abandoned village in Galicia - rather a lovely view, but a fair bit of work to do...

Oh yes - death to sailing ships, I believe. So we won't have to worry about Armadas there.

Our relatives over there say that very few Spaniards wish to live rurally; it's not part of their dreams at all. A nice apartment with a good view, easy access to the beach & the shops, and a decent job; there are no jobs in the countryside. An English lady near us has brought her half-Spanish adult children over here to live in a mobile home whilst they look for work; they're all bi-lingual, two out of three have degrees, they're aged from 27-32 and none of them have ever had any paid employment. Yes, they could stay on their father's farm (on the Pilgrim's Trail to Santiago) & at least they'd eat, but they want more out of life than that...

Another thing to add is that any stores will be miles away with very low quality tracks to and from any towns. You may have no water, drainage or power. So costs of living will be higher because of the lack of facilities locally. Also Spanish property is still falling in value so it looks over priced as well. Plus you would need to spend a fortune on the place.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

  • Evening all, just back from a lovely weekend away for a concert and some time with my lovely DD and glad to be off a very crowded, noisy and hot train. While I was there I read 'Last Light' which I got as a free download and found it quite difficult reading, not because of the content which was very predictable but because the whole storyline was a rehash of any other similar novel I've ever read, even the names of the heroines are lifted from the original Survivors programme, not for me I think, too negative and sensational. I was conscious though, coming back along the railway line of just a few, very few newly established garden plots being cultivated in back gardens where only lawn has been for umpteen years and seeing people tending them and planting and hoeing so maybe the collective public are beginning to become aware of the need to do just a tinch of providing for themselves? I don't begin to know why folks are doing this now and can only imagine that prices are beginning to pinch pockets in a significant way but it gives me just a small bit of hope that if and when there are problems for whatever reason we might not be in quite such a quandry as we might otherwise have been. One thing I did take from Last Light though was the thought that it might be a wise move to think of a safe space, not immediately obvious to anyone who didn't know it was there in the event that there was a break in with intent, I'd much rather lose posessions and stores than our lives, we can manage on very little if we absolutely have to but we would need to be alive and kicking to do so, it's something I'll have to give some serious thinking to, Lyn xxx.

I take this as "don't go to the healthcare providers in Saudi".
