Hey, has anyone else noticed that thingy on the sidebar of the main MSE site about Royal Mail is now going to roll out the "leaving your items with a neighbour even if you haven't agreed this beforehand" scheme nationwide? As in signed-for things as well as things not fitting thru the letterbox? If you don't active opt out, they'll assume you're OK with this.

Well, hully-gee, Mildred, but some of us don't have the Waltons living next door. I'm horrified that some of my immediate neighbours might end up with my stuff, heaven knows what that bunch of crims would do with it. I've just registered to opt out and they send you a sticker to put on/ near your letter box to make it clear that you're NOT having this.

And what is the mortal point of the sender paying extra for a signed service to prove that YOU got their item if any Tom, !!!!!! or Harriet can sign for it?

I'd heard that you could opt for a neighbour you felt safe with for items to be left with but as you have said GQ where you live there probably isn't anyone suitable:(so your decision is probably the right one.

Our cows are arriving on the field soon :D should be fun..any tips on collecting pats for the garden anyone ???

Hubby has refused to collect some after work for me for some reason, something to do with stinking out his van....... meany DH! As you're closer to them I'll let you experiment first :D
My dad said he had to collect them as a kid from the field at the bottom of his garden Feb/march and they would be stacked up and covered till October to kill off weed seeds due to heat generated during the summer before granddad would use them . Granddad won all sorts of prizes for his veg so do want to have a go. Maybe we could find an area of the field not used by anyone else, stack and cover and wait and see.
Still can't believe they're putting cows there.

I think that the postie can just leave it with whoever he thinks is safe.

Now DS and her neighbours all accept post for each other. In the snow, the van came to a halt on the "main road" (half a mile away) and thrust the post for the entire hamlet into the arms of the people house-sitting next door.

My neighbours here are OK except when they took a parcel in and went on honey moon the next day without giving me someone Chrissie present! Some of my previous neighbours would have flogged anything that anyone let them get their mitts on. As it was they would e in any open door or window and nick stuff in broad daylight.

Fantastic, Jeannie :T you gave me a really good laugh!

Speaking of vege stuff, I am not sure whether this is a syndrome or just a symptom, but I have a small growth of Borlotti, is it serious?
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    :rotfl: I've rephrased it :D
although stacked deep enough it would be a great mulch. Cows eat all sorts of weeds and unless heated via composting any seeds eaten will germinate all over 'ones' garden.

topic - cow pats (to avoid further confusion ie by me) Im sure if you add them to your compost heap they would turn it into amazing compost as they generate heat dont they? Do not keep them in a cupboard or attempt to make them into yoghurt :rotfl:

  • A good friend of mine just gave me advance warning that the power company (we only have one in Greece) are starting their rolling 48 hour power cuts on Monday! Pleased I knew last week that they were planning them, as it gave me time to stock up on long burning candles, extra gas bottles for the hob, an oil lamp that runs on olive oil etc. I also put some cooked foods like chicken in the small freezer and put the ice cream in there so we can eat those should the power go off. Then we can keep the main freezer shut as its full to the brim.

I have warned all my friends on facebook and the local forums and groups ..sometimes technology is a big bonus for communication. Going to charge the e book reader, phones and netbook over the weekend so they are kept fully charged until whenever. Our house alarm and many other things run on battery power, or solar. I will fill the car and scooters up with petrol on Sunday.

Luckily we don't need the heating on at all as its still the heatwave here..it was 35 in the shade today again. Its still 24 degrees in the house at ten pm with all the windows open to let some fresh air in. I finished all my ironing today and put it away and just have a few bits of washing to do over the weekend before the cuts are expected.

If we go off after Monday I will update whenever I can, if the power is off then I will have no wifi internet. I don't know if the whole of the island will be off at once (dear me I hope not!) or if it will be certain areas. If the power is on at the gym or the Marina and not at home they will let me charge anything like phones or netbook that need charging so that will work well for us.

At least I am well prepared this time for the SHTF for us...thanks to everyone for all their contributions to this thread....it has helped me focus and prepare, so hopefully the power cuts will not be a major problem for us...just very awkward!

Will be posting over the weekend and when I can next week, just didn't want to disappear off your radar and have you all worried sick that I might have been abducted by aliens or attacked by zombies in Lidl's!

  • Shhhhhhhh CATERINA I've got a really large case of the Borlottis, and mine have gone dry and hard and I'm keeping them in a jar in the kitchen - is it an offence to keep them after they've been dried off on the boiler, will we be in trouble? Hope not Cheers Lyn xxx.
