Alibobsy and thrifty, thinking of you both, hope things improve for you and yours.

Have been MIA for a while as I am revolutionising the house and only pop on now and then. As hubbys health deteriorates I am trying to de-clutter right down to basics for various reasons not least the possibility of a hospital bed in the living room at a later date. I dont intend to turn round one day and have to juggle everything to fit one in - personal prepping I guess.

D&dd you have more tree's? What did you get this time? Its now officially an orchard I guess :D You are going to have some fab fruit pies the next few years.

So sorry to hear that Ali :( hope things improve for you soon XX
It's such a worry when you don't live with the poorly person isn't it especially when there's a great distance to travel to take care of them.
Sending healing vibes to all that need them XX

I have news...DS2 has an interview...with a disaster management company of all things *that's ma'boy* :) so chuffed he's actually got an interview at last bless him he was starting to think no-one wanted him :( Looks like a fantastic company so extremeties crossed everyone for next Tuesday please!!

ETA MY TREES JUST ARRIVED FROM DTBROWN WHOOP...

I am lucky Mum and Dad are just a few streets away, and even in laws are only 15-20 mins away so at least we can pop around if they need us. Although juggling 4 kids with one car that OH uses for his self employed work can get a bit difficult at times.

Fingers crossed for your DS. Wish you hadn't mentioned those half price trees from DT Brown, being eyeing up a few myself and now you are tempting me to order.

Regarding Public Liability Insurance for the Allotments.

Don't you have PLI included in your home/contents insurance?

Yes, but it doesn't cover such scenarios as somebody's kid running across the plot, falling and seriously injuring themselves on something on the plot, then the parents suing us. Hence the Council in their infinite wisdom wanting us to have specific PL insurance.

As to why the Council doesn't then extend their own PL insurance to cover tenanted allotments in the same way as it does untenanted ones, and then adding another fiver a year or whatever to the rents, let's not go there ...

:( Can you sue for injuries if you sustain them while trespassing? I ask genuiney -I'd like to know.

The only people allowed on our allotments are plotholders, the allotment officer and the council's contractor(s) doing various council directed things like mowing the communal grass access tracks or mending the water taps.

There was an argy-bargy here a few years back when some people had their plots done up like Fort Knox and even had some barbed wire over the top of the fences. The barbed wire had to be removed, according to the council, in case intruders hurt themselves. Hmmm, would-be thieves getting punctured or scratched........ can't see a problem with that personally.:rotfl:I guess I'll have to fill in the alligator pits and disarm the automated crossbow inside the shed now. Or someone might sue me for everything I've got. Hang about, since everything isn't a lot, is it worth taking a chance on it? Hold the 'gator, it may have a job left to do.

(((Ali))) take are, pet. I've had a TIA myself and it's a scary thing but I was lucky enough to make a full recovery. I hope he does, too. And here's hoping thriftwizard's Mum is doing OK today.

Went to archery last night and had a bit of a so-so night and then at the very end noticed that Teach had sneakily added those tiny yellow easter chicks to some of the targets. Just poked in through existing arrowholes by their wee plastic feet. I managed to hit one and knock it clean to the floor so I've brought it home to sit on my desk. It's making me smile.

I learned something awesome last night. Olympic archers shoot at targets 70m away. In archery, a tiny movement of either the hand holding the bow, or the hand releasing the arrow, magnifies over distance the arrow goes off-centre sharply. On our little indoor range, about 0.5 cm wobble will get you about 20 cm off the centre of the target.

On a 70 m range, a wobble no bigger than a line drawn by a biro will see the arrow miss the target altogether. Not just miss the scoring part, miss the whole blessed thing and fly past.

Because I know how hard it is to repeatedly fire an arrow without making a slight off movement with one hand or the other, that just blows me away.:rotfl:

Occupiers Liability Act 1984 - as the occupier of the land (you don't have to be the owner) you have a legal responsibility for the safety of all lawful visitors. Regarding unlawful ones I.e. trespassers, it is a bit more complex, but essentially if they are children your liability is higher - especially if it something that children may be attracted to (in my case a building site). So you need to ensure you leave nothing available to them to cause them harm i.e in my case a ladder by which they can access scaffolding. That is very simplistic but you get the gist

For others there is the doctrine of "volenti non fit injuria" or "to a willing person, injury is not done", if you know you are taking a risk then then you can't sue for any resulting damage, but this will usually not apply to children

    The same applies to shooting.

    1 minute of angle (that's 1/60th of 1 degree) equals 1" at 100 yards.

I've shot at a distance of 1,000 yards, where that minute of angle adds up to an error of 10".

Bear in mind, the Lee Enfield sniper rifle (yes, that's what I was shooting), has a telescope calibrated to 2,300 yards.

Each click of the telescope's adjustment knob is equal to 1/4 of a minute, which means, at 2,300 yards, that one click will move the POI (Point Of Impact) 5.75".

Daz glad you got it sorted out

Ginny sorry to hear you're having to prep for things to get even harder, but I do admire your forethought.I also think it keeps you sane though too doesn't it knowing you have prepared for things.

My own parents are in clearing out mode atm as I said we've had a bit of a run losing close rellies, one of whom had mental health issues and had a hoarders house..so they are trying to offload stuff so me and my brother don't have to..I've already threatened them they've both gotta make at least their hundredth birthdays or else!!! It's just something they suddenly feel they want to do..

Ali and thrifty hope your respective parents are doing better today XX

I use the slug one does snails and slugs, the vine weevil one is excellent for our strawberries and there is a grow your own one does all the other stuff like caterpillars etc.
If you have animals its safe no worries about slug pellets etc. and I only ever do the one application not 6 weekly as they suggest so very moneysaving compared to buckets of slug pellets.

I'd do it PDQ if I was you lest the RSPCA get wind of it and you end up before the magistrates.

Keep the pit, just use punji sticks instead of the 'gator. Saves the feeding and there's no smell :)
