I have loads of LED's. They do cut the cost of use significantly. They are instant on like the old incandescents, but be careful about where you get them from. I have had some that faded or died after some use. I think that they are getting better and better, but as a very early adopter of them I have had problems. Though no more problems, than with older traditional bulbs. They are getting cheaper as well. I have some 20 around the house and worked out that if I left them all on they would only use about 90 watts, which is less than a single old incandescent bulb.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I think your choice of filling is crucial. It needs to be able to withstand heat and be very efficient at blocking heat transfer. So have you decided what to fill it with?

Discussions are currently ongoing on Facebook but Memory Girl ( hey sexy lady :) ) has came up with the best idea so far, a lot of us tend to give her challenges which she always rises to and defeats in her own unique style :)

So far beads in wee bags around it are winning as it allows us to wash the bag etc :-)

I think they would, El - one thing I'm going to use is old duvets (washed, obviously!).

Your idea sounds like a wonderful dream KC a multi use one :)
  • A very good and free insulation material is the polystyrene packaging 'beans' shaped like distorted peanuts that usually get thrown away from around electronic equipment. Also you can buy polystyrene beads from haberdashers, they're used to fill bean bag seats and in some craft projects. I've seen them in John Lewis and they're not expensive, they would do the job well as they'd give lots of tiny spaces between the beads for insulating the cooking pot.

    Hi El (waves)

Spent a couple of hours with a tame science prof this afternoon and he has done all the heat transfer equations for me so I know exactly how much polystyrene beads to use.

So I shall order up a couple of cubic feet from ebay and make a prototype this weekend ........ tutorial to follow as soon as I have drafted a pattern and tested out Mr Science's sums by actually cooking something :-)

She is right though - I do get challenged to do some odd things :-)

Why not ban MP's from private health insurance so that they get plenty of experience of what they are doing to the NHS. Do the same for schools. Unless their own children are going to state they cannot be MP's or vote on any service that they are unwilling to use themselves. It would be interesting to see how a party that sends its kids to private schools would be able to muster enough support to push through controversial reforms.

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree with everything you say, I do disagree with this - I thought we lived in a free country where people had choice over what to spend their money on and how their children are educated. Additionally you can't take it out on the kids what their parents choose to do - and this is from someone who would not want to send their child to private school, but I do respect the choices of those that do.

Someone made an interesting point in the Mail regarding this the other day, in light of Michael Gove sending his daughter to Grey Coat Hospital School.

They pointed out that this was taking away a place at a good school from another child who's parents could not afford to pay for schooling. Food for thought, eh?
