Another gardener getting hammered by local codes in the US here:-
http://www.wakingtimes.com/2014/02/11/city-ordinance-nightmare-texas-homeowner-facing-2600-fines-weeds/
I can't see that happening here, with the whole englishmans house his castle attitude inbred into us all lol
BUT I can see them pushing people to grow their own and limiting any help you can get if you have land to grow your own food, should we ever reach a point where food is in short supply and certainly can see ration books coming in again at some point.
I suspect the US will be more aggressive in controlling the masses, so to speak as the high number of guns in private hands mean they could easily descend into civil war.
Mind you someone pointed out that big business may put pressure on gov to push us to buy more food from them and that doesn't seem that far fetched to me.
For info we went to the big Asda with MIL yesterday, our nearest is only a small one so doesn't always have the same stuff.
They had an "ethnic" section with 2kg bags of various pulses for £2 (can't recall them all, but we got yellow split peas and red lentils and I think they had some other kind of lentils and various beans. They also had large bags of rice, but I missed the price.
Going to pop back up when we have a bit more spare cash and stock up.
Also the Baxters soups which are lovely and rarely seem to go on offer were at 50p a can.
Going to see if the one near us has the same soup offer later in the week if we have some spare cash to stock up.

You'd think that the rich and silly would know better, wouldn't you? Pretending to live on a low income for a week proves diddly-squat. Because you know it's a pretence and it's only a week.
Let's imagine IRL as a poor person. You have a 30 year old stove with only one working burner and an iffy oven. You have no money to replace it when it finally dies and will have no choice but to go into debt to pay for its replacement. You walk the pavement in thinning shoes, worried about how you will pay your bills and whether the money will run out before the month.
Life is fraught with humiliations great and small when you're poor, both for yourself and your family. You dread every time the 'pupil post' brings home another solicitation for money for charity, for a trip, for extras, for a costume for this and that. You don't want your kids to go without and you don't want them to be ashamed in front of their peers, but it's already heating or eating and the demands never stop.............
You already face a working age life of struggle and an old age of desperate poverty, but you do live in a world which brandishes the lifestyles of the rich and famous in front of you. And one which sells the pernicious lie that everyone can be successful and that those who aren't are thick and idle and deserve to chew on days-old bread and dripping.
So, you rich and silly person, daytripping on Planet Poverty for the benefit of a column, how do you feel when you look in the mirror? Well satisfied with your lot, or just a bit like Marie Antoinette playing sherperdesses in her faux rural idyll?
I would say that they should be ashamed of themselves, but feeling shame is an advanced emotion requiring a sense of fellow-feeling and caring what the rest of society will think of you.
Me, I'm going out to play wiv pointy things. If I need to focus by sardonic and bloodshot eye on a target, I shall just envisage a leading politician's eye where I need to shoot and it'll land beautifully.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

If they had to cope for a month lets see how well they cope. It might be very different if they had to live on it for longer. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

Whilst I agree with Madam Currie's point that people should work hard and save up for things, her comments are no help to those who are already in a desperate situation. Anyone can be in a good job and a comfy financial situation, and then due to illness, injury or their firm going bust, they can find themselves rapidly running out of money and having to go on benefits. Even the smug, rich gits who run off at the mouth about the f e c k less poor, could find themselves on skid row. Yes, there are scroungers and scumbags, but the majority would rather be in a position to pay their way in this world, and not be dependent on handouts.
Madam Currie and her friends should remember "There, but for the grace of God, go I"One life - your life - live it!0 -

I was in my local Council Tax Office earlier today.
I was in conversation with the lady behind the counter, when a man walks up and starts a conversation with her.
So I say "Excuse me, but this lady is dealing with me.".
The lady behind the desk says "He's my supervisor." (as though this somehow justifies his bad manners)
I replied "I don't care who his is. You are dealing with me. He can wait his turn".
He coughed up an apology and skulked away a few feet.0 -

It's very interesting to see the real history behind the events.0
