It can get really cold here and I haven't had a problem yet in 25 years here. If anybody gets frozen pipes it tends to be the two end houses and we're in the middle. You need to keep your head, hands and feet warm.
There are people who live much further out than me and they cope fine. Is just a question of being organised and sensible.

Sorry, just had an image there in my mind of indecent thermals. Crotchless longjohns perhaps? :)

hahahaha no they only go like that once you have owned them for umpteen years an worn them to death and you want to make sure you get your moneys worth out of them...

It is hard taking them to slaughter, I sort of 'wean' myself away from them in the latter weeks...emotionally if that makes sense... so while we got them, they are spoilt rotten, and get all the attention and live a happy outdoor life, where as the pork you buy in the supermarket is reared inside... you even got to watch the 'wording' on the naturally reared pork.. as yes they might have been born and reared until weaned outside, but then they are taken indoors to finish.. and are under controlled condition so they put on weight evenly and lave as little fat as poss...

here is our bacon and gammon we had back this week

Before we had the pigs, and people were telling us you can see nd taste the diff, I honestly thought there couldn't be that much diff, but there is..

I know it is slightly off topic, BUT.... in another way it isn't... It is worth supporting and buying from local indendants if poss... even if it is just a butcher or a baker, or a local market garden producer etc... because They will remember you supporting them on a regular basis if SHTF and and will help you out if they can...

Our friends that help us out, you know the type, you can phone htem up at any time day or night and they are there for you.. we have one that has helped us all the way with the land... so we have given him pork, even though he wanted to pay for it....

  • Thanks for such a good and positive post MAR, coping with cold weather really is just being sensible, appropriately dressed and knowing when you're too cold to stay out in it any longer isn't it? if you add in to that having in store enough food, fuel and means of lighting your home even if you are forced to being in only a couple of rooms you'll ride out any prolonged period of cold weather in relative comfort and certainly in health!!!

I assumed it was cold, however I can't read French so not sure!

It will be bloody cold whatever it is, if a genuine prediction.

  • Cooltrikerchic that looks lovely. We buy our pork from the local farm and it is definitely tastier with better crackling than what you get from the supermarkups.
We are going up there in the week to get some coal and pork when the car gets back from the garage.

  • I've just had a look at cold weather predictions for the UK until early march and there is nothing horrendous flagged up for anywhere from the Orkneys to the Isle of Wight. Some frosty periods, some showery/rainy periods but nothing nearly as cold as -20!!! No need to get out the thermal nose warmers yet!!!

I don't think the French will give you the answer.

    It says:

    Lundi 24 Fevrier 2014
    13:00 locale

Anomalie Geop (I think this is geophysique, apologies for lack of accent, can't do on this keyboard) z500 dam.
    Moyenne +216h

In the top rh corner it says Run ECMWF ENS (moyenne) 12z du Samedi 15 Fevrier.

My French is very rusty, but I think that's
    Monday 24 February 2104
    13:00 local time

Geophysical anomaly z500 dam. I don't know what dam is an abbreviation for or what z500 is, though I can see that there are references to it in weather literature.

    Average + 216h

ECMWF stands for the European Centre for Medium Range Weather forecasts:
    http://www.ecmwf.int/

ENS appears to stand for ensemble, its forecasting datasets.

Sorry, I'm sure none of us are any the wiser after that rubbish attempt on my part. Moyenne is the only real word of interest, it appears to be an average of their datasets giving that reading... but that's my word only as a total outsider.
