Morning preppers, loads of thought-provoking reading over the last few days. We've not had that care data leaflet either, so emailed meself the letter to print out and deliver.

Been making shopping lists for the weekend, adding a few extras on, but looking at the whole thing it looks like I'm stocking up for Armaggeddon! :D. Wil have to split the list between different retail establishments, and def no loyalty cards, will be clocked straight away as Someone With Ideas!!! :rotfl:

Weather not too bad today, very blustery, but no rain for a change. WM doing the first of a few loads, going to sort things for CS to get rid of next week. Littlies need a few new things, but I also want space to store extra bit I find in CS, blankets, pots, etc.

Rather disturbing reading about bankers, esp when I learn that they were going to be dishing the dirt on murky subjects, methinks they had help on their journeys across the Styx! Def upping the levels of cash, TP, water and long life food over the next week.

Keep safe, esp those of you with hellish weather, lots of hugs and virtual sand bags.

    A xo

Up early tomorrow for work and a late sun/tuesday after that 2 glorious weeks off....if im not going away ....which is often.... i usually choose a prepping project or item to acquire.....this annual leave ive chosen to try and find a box .... that would act as a faraday cage...not very large needed ... back up phone ,radio , kindle etc....some one mentioned a ammunition box would be useful.....any other ideas what and where to look for such a thing?...thank you

    Further thoughts.
Line the inside of the box with a non conductive layer, my preference is anti-static foam packing, but that's something I have easy access to - its used as packing for electronic components. I'd also pack each item into an anti-static bag if you can, and include a couple of the silica gel sachets. Fill any spare space with foam packing so that the contents don't rattle around.

Siegemode and ragz DON'T PANIC!! lol that always makes me want to panic lol :D Just quietly make sure your household is covered. Have some food, some water, some cash, and some heat. Simples ;)
EDITED- Yes I second the big one pot stew with anything and everything thrown into it. I cooked for us on one electric ring for 6 weeks, a family of 5.
Also if you have made many changes to lifestyle so you can live more cheaply then you have a lot more scope to cope than most people. I am paying off debts right now and so when that is completed my disposable income will rocket 700%. That will make it all worthwhile. I can then prepare for any SHTF. After that I am going to be able to relax, I will be so much better prepared than most people.

Sometimes I think people think that I might be pessimistic but if I were why would I make plans for the future? I think that I will be able to cope far better than many of my friends.

  • If your stocking up your food stores it's worth looking in Tesco, they are clearing a lot of lines at really low prices. Our tesco has an Irish food section, they had odlams bread mix (lrg bag) for 40p,bottles of white vinegar £1 reduced to 25p,tea and coffee really cheap and small tins of healthy options beans for 8p.Cant remember where I heard about it,it may of been hotukdeals .

Unlurking to say that I found the Splosh stuff rubbish. I often use Ecover or BioD so I think I have a reasonable idea of the performance of eco cleaners and Splosh didn't hit the mark at all.

You needed tons of washing up liquid to get it to work so much that I finished the bottle in a week! (there are only two of us here) The kitchen cleaner was ok but nothing special and both the laundry liquids left my boyfriends clothes as dirty as when they went in. He works our land so is very grubby but most eco laundry stuff at least gets the smell out if not the actual stains. I ended up having to use double to get stuff passably clean.

Everyone else online seems to love it but I think I have fairly low standards and it really disappointed me. So much that I asked for my money back (something they offer if you don't like on their website) and although they gave it back straight away they were very 'short' via email which definitely put the nail in their coffin for me!

Always good to get a range of opinions Haux, will be interested to see how they do when it comes. I had been a bit torn about trying it tbh because of the intial pack costs, but the idea of having refils that take little space to store appealed as much as the eco side of things.

Glad to win the comp and get to try for free.
Not trying the laundry stuff as we have 4 kids with combos of skin sensitivities, lots of washing and dirty clothes-we do alot of gardening, have chickens and OH does handyman/gardening. We use Aldi non bio and it does everything we need it to and doesn't set anyones skin off. Not eco, but does the job so don't dare chance changing.

Trying the washing up liquid, toilet bowl cleaner, kitchen spray and hand wash.

    Will report back later lol.

Metal storage cabinet, then tend to come up alot on freegle etc. We have a few we use for storage anyway. Line the drawer with a non conductive material e.g cardboard and shut your items in it. If we have time I will shove foil into the gaps around the drawer front to enclose the whole unit, but in theory it would work anyway.

Seems to be dabate online about the need to ground or not ground the cage, but from what recall from my a levels a faraday cage works either way.

Plus of course most of us have cars which are already in effect a type of faraday cage.

I suppose it depends if you rely on a warning to have some time to put stuff away or if you want to have a "set" of extra items permanently stored.

For a solar storm we should get at least somewhere around 1 hours warning if not longer. An EMP is less likely I think, but much more likely to have little or no warning.

We have just assumed an EMP is highly unlikely and if it happened the whole country would be in such a state that mobiles etc would be pretty useless anyway so just have the cabinet ready in case of warnings.

I think a solar storm has many hours warning. The last one was more than 24 hours ahead. There are a number of solar satellites that watch our sun for Coronal Mass Ejections particularly if they are headed our way. The very simple solution is to run around unplugging what you can from the mains. That will protect them from any inducted surge in the mains. Unless there are high magnetic fields the inductive effect in devices is small enough to be safe.

If you want to go off grid you will need a portable faraday cage to hide your phone in.
