Anyone know if there are any American public holidays between now and Good Friday? I want to diarise potential trouble spots and manoever accordingly. I'm suspicious that a four day Easter weekend might be being pencilled in for a Cyprussing, and then there's the two May BH to consider.................

I just bought this in Bee and Queue for £22. I have just loaded it with three washer loads and there are still a lot of empty lines:(

Didn't have an issue with this ourselves, then again maybe your tastebuds are better than mine lol. Used salad cream glass bottles as well and didn't notice anything. I collect the bottles oer winter and then they sit until August/Septemeber so perhaps that helps, then I boiled them in salted water.

Also use mint sauce jars for apple jellies and other jams and never noticed anything.

I believe you can buy new lids from various places online.

    Ali x

Actually, to be fair, I didn't really notice the taste, it was the waft of tomato ketchup when I took the lid off that was offputting. Grandma (I think) buys new lids but I have never found any the right size for the ketchup bottles

Grandma sorry if you've already done this but would you mind posting the link for the place you get your lids from? I was sorting out the END ROOM (of the cellar) a place that only the brave venture:eek: and where I keep my spare jam jars. Because it has been so wet, and cellars not being known for being damp free (although it's usually OK) some of the lids have gone mouldy. How I don't know, I am scrupulous about sterilising them before I store them as well as before I use them. Hey ho
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

    Here you go.
I just had a quick look around, they do sauce bottles and it says the lids are 43mm which they also sell. not sure what measurement the sm ones are.

In many ways when things get bad most people get through. While I might not have most things covered yet, i could still trade bread for anything that I need. Most crises are over in a matter of a week or so. With a bit of warning I can easily get through that period. As I have topped up with milk yesterday I could get through 8 days without leaving home if necessary.

Due to health restraints neither OH or I feel up to going out sometimes and it's not unusual for us to go 8 days without leaving the house. I know we would be ok for a few weeks possibly longer. Although our diet may become a little boring the plus side is we would lose weight:rotfl:

Siegemode I could have written most of that post, I completely get where you're coming from. Hubby and I have, over the past year-ish got rather obsessed with it all... too much reading, too late at night, on all sorts of serious subjects. (I even looked up derivatives several times and tried to understand them!) It really does get a bit heavy...
GreyQueen Excellent advice, will try to take it on board myself.

Every so often I have a few ostrich days and focus on ignoring all the carp around us, but then the anxiety returns and I'm back on the case. Distracting myself with nice fluffy moments of indulgence and having lalalala I'm not listening moments doesn't last long before the need to know what's happening and the fear of missing something important returns:( OH and I are both singing from the same song sheet so we are at least able to share and discuss things together:) I have always been obsessive about information being power so in these turbulent times I struggle to switch off.

Interesting that GQ's mother and Siegemode's father in law don't take any notice when they suggest getting cash out of the bank. My mother (72) is the same. I guess that generation were brought up in an era when the bank manager was the most trusted & respected person in town. Come to think of it, I don't think my mother has ever used a cashpoint.

Last Sunday my mother mentioned she had run out of dishwasher tablets for nearly a week, and had to do the dishes by hand until Asda shop day.

'Oh, for goodness sake mother,' I said, ' That's the sort of thing I have a spare box of in case of emergencies. And where do you live relative to the shops compared with me?'

(I live 50 yards from Lidl, & 100 yards from Waitrose & Iceland. Mum lives 4 miles from Asda.)

edit: BTW GQ, didn't you say your mother lives a long bus ride away? You might not be able to take cash or groceries to her if SHTF.

All our individual parents think we are bonkers and FIL and MIL especially seem to trust everything they are told by the msm or other people, but not us which is so frustrating. MIL took out an equity release despite our pleading with her not to, but the nice man from the Norw1ch Un1on and both SILs convinced her it was a good decision. Although it helped all of us at the time we paid off some debt from OH's past with his ex. The others spent on luxuries and frittered it:( Now 10 yrs on MIL won't even open the yearly statement because it upsets her that interest on interest (7%)means that she no longer owns her home.
As for the need and convenience of keeping spares or stocking up on offers, well that's a nightmare conversation I have given up on. Both MIL and FIL are unable to comprehend the idea from either a money saving or being prepared perspective. They believe it's fussing after all they can just pop to the shops or order online from @sda when they need something.

FIL thinks his bank are trustworthy and know best, but is slowly coming round. I showed him how much he was being ripped off by them on his home insurance:mad: He now trusts that we are more informed and looking out for him, but it's still frustrating. He has plenty of torches and a stash of candles and a few extra cans and packets that we have stashed in his cupboards. I think he just accepts that we've stashed these things but thinks it's a lot of fuss. Being 200 miles away from him means that for us it's peace of mind knowing that he will have light and food at least.

GreyQueen, mardatha, Hollyberry and others, thanks for all the wise words and hugs. I was having a bit of an input overload wobble, so much going on. Music is our escape and we have a few things planned to focus on this year and I have Buddy Guy playing as I type. Feeling much better today. Thanks

Pineapple thanks for reminding me opting out regarding medical records.

I've posted about this on the 'Singlies' thread on this forum and included this link to a GP's website, about the Care.org leaflet that everyone is supposed to have had put through the door with their mail. Of the people I have asked, a good percentage haven't had the leaflet, two said they thought it was connected with the previous survey to do with social care and most thought that if the NHS sent it, it must be OK.

My MP is currently 'taking up the matter with the Government on [my] behalf'. We can only opt out if we know and if we have actually seen the original leaflet. In addition my GP's Practice Manager says that legally we can't opt out, what we are doing is dissenting. I'm all for a little timely dissenting! Two MPs have tabled an early day motion, such is their concern, but we know how they normally get 'talked out' if they don't fit in with current plans.
