Yip 2tonsils.That's the scenario I prep for. Lack of power for a few days. Do you know how long in between the rolling strikes you all have to restock etc?0

I always thought nutella was too good to be healthy but never got round to checking it out. Thanks 2tonsils the tiger balm as insect bite reliever was good news to me as anything that flies past bites me  and I always have tiger balm in the house.

Gardens?
This is one end of mine back at the start of June. I knew I was going to be giving up the allotment by then so I took the turf up from one end of the "lawn" and built a series of raised beds edged with scrap timber. There's six in the picture, there's a small one bside the wallhouse and another one you can't see very well through the tree. It's not much compared to a 40' x 80' allotment but it's been surprisingly productive this year re salad crops and things like cabbage, peas and carrots. I've also put a row of fruit bushes and raspberry canes along the back wall, there's space for four more 3' x 6' beds off to the right, a small shed/DD's old playhouse, compost bins and space to either put a big 6'x8' greenhouse in or two more beds. So not so bad really, I'll probably manage about a third of what I would grow in the allotment in a normal year.Val.0 -
Wow that looks amazing too, and how high is your house to get a pic like that? Its so tidy, so that where Im going wrong I need more organisation and a re think about layout. Am off to put pencil to paper!Clearing the junk to travel light

Because we live in the islands the electric cuts were between 7 and 10 days apart last time. It was a nighmare trying to figure out the food in the freezers....only lost the ice cream last time but then I had it melted over some home made cake LOL.....the stuff that had to be cooked was cooked and refrozen when the electric came back on or eaten on the day it was cooked. Luckily the weather is cooler now so at least its not roasting hot and likely to defrost everything quickly. I will put newspapers in to help insulate them if the power is off.
We don't need any form of heating at the moment so that is not a problem. My hob is calor gas and we have spare bottles in, only the microwave and table top oven is electric. The only problem is that we will not know in advance when we are going to get the 48 hour strike as it will be without warning to take the authorities unawares. As our hot water is electric we may be going to the Marina to get a good hot shower, always presuming that our strikes will not be on at the same time!
Will be keeping phones, Kobo and other stuff charged just in case we get hit by the electric black outs.
We have two scooters that we use in good weather to keep the cost of petrol down...so will keep them and the car filled up with fuel. That way we will be okay one way or another with either the car or one of the bikes always available for transport.
Life isn't getting any easier and the doctors and chemists have just voted to continue their action....so have to pay full price for meds if we can get them and have to pay for the doctor even though we have health care cover...hmmmmm. Good job I stocked up our meds isn't it?“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
I just realised that it means the shops will be shut for 48 hours when they have no power because of the tills, they would not be allowed to open without them. It also means their freezers are going to defrost as well... I remember last time they were emptying the food from the freezers and loading it in bin bags to dispose of...I don't suppose they are allowed to sell it off cheaply just in case. I might be using my emergency skills sooner than I had thought....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Hi everyone
We've had a couple of queries about this thread so we wanted to just answer here too.
As far as we can see this is the kind of thing that used to be posted on Old Style in its early days eg wartime spirit, make do and mend, being prepared for any eventuality etc.
Boards do evolve over time and mean different things to different people and not everyone will like it but it's up to all Old Stylers how you choose to use the board so let's all get on with saving each other money.
Thanks

Basically I can't fit anymore in my shelter than a year's worth. When I try to get in it I'm already having to squeeze my bristols in to get passed the SPAM tins. Essentials include bottled water, SPAM (already mentioned), Windeze (I suffer from terrible bouts of smelly flatulance), gas mask (for reasons just mentioned) and Cheesy Wotsits.
I love lists too:D
I'm guessing SPAM is the key word??Gardens?

Never used them, but would something like a solar shower be helpful ?"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510
