DS1 now safely returned to Underwater City & back to his least-favourite grindstone; his bijou waterside residence has somehow survived unscathed. The water clearly got up to the deck outside the living room door and also down the street behind them but sandbags seem to have actually stopped it getting under the door. Phew! But it's been an interesting exercise, the travelling in these conditions, thinking about what we should have done (& didn't; TBH I was too harassed after the nightmare journey, & he's simply never believed that this kind of stuff really does happen) to ensure his stuff, and above all his life's work, were safe, etc. etc. So we can consider ourselves warned, I think. And also lucky; turns out he couldn't afford insurance...
DS2 & the trainee DiL have gone off to stay with friends, DS3 not yet emerged from The Pit, and the DDs are busy with a Baking Bible in the kitchen. Sanity has returned and I'm off to put my feet up with a fascinating book about fabric design in the 50s & 60s!Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -

Wild Thing is where she normally is (out) and the Queen is curled up in the centre of a double bed purring her little heart out. It's so very easy to make cats happy, isn't it? All you have to do is dance attendance on their every whim and put their wants before your own needs and conveniences, and the cats are perfectly happy. :rotfl
Have you been watching my household, GreyQueen?
Hope everyone had a good Christmas although it sounds like the SHTF for some down south with flooding and black outs. We've been relatively unscathed up here but I believe that may change today.
In the prepping vein there's not been much happening here. My new chest freezer is getting full and getting in rather a mess so I think a reorganisation is in order when I do the grocery list on Sunday. The pantry could do with a tidy too so that will keep me busy.
My mum bought me some lovely flannelette bedding for Christmas so I need to get that through the wash and ready for the cleaner to put on the bed when she comes after the weekend.
Those difficulties down south are focussing my thoughts. I don't have enough candles although I do have a torch somewhere ... Time to have a serious think about what's most likely to happen and how to prep for it ...Household: Laura + William-cat

Another blustery day out there. Today is going to be a tidying and organising day so will take the opportunity to check the stocks and refresh the water stores. Unfortunately I've just broken my resolution not to spend anything in the sales having spotted the hard back edition of Mabey's Food for Free reduced to nine quid at Amaz0n (for the next hour if anyone is interested) - I've been looking out for a copy in the charity shops for ages without success.

The wind and rain was really bad last night. was up until 2 am..then just cap napped as I just could not sleep with the noise of the wind.. I could hear our slates moving on the roof, so will take a better look later hopefully when the wind has eased off a bit..
I am going to make sure I buy/get some spare roof tiles and store them, as then if one comes off and breaks we have one to replace it with...Work to live= not live to work0 -
Morning all.
Well, the interaction between the Q and Wild Thing continues to amuse. Reminds me of something I read in a book on thrifty living to the effect that cats are expensive mousetraps but cheap entertainment.
Parents have a low windowsill above a radiator which has been much favoured over the years by a succession of cats. It is perfectly possible for both to enjoy the warmth at the same time but, depsite being litter-mates, our two girls aren't pals.
The radiator was WT's favourite perch then, in one of those inexplicable power-shifts, the Q took over for a week. Yesterday, the Q put herself to bed circa midday and resurfaced about 9.30 pm and thought she'd go lie on "her" windowsill, only to find WT in possession for the past several hours and unwilling to give ground. Feline swearing ensued and the Q retreated in a huff.
Pretty wild night here but blew over about 5 am. The Q has gone to bed again and WT is Out. WT is nearly always Out, so much so that she spent 12 hours last week locked in the bike shed before they thought to go looking for her.:) She does check in pretty regularly for her grub.
Yesterday afternoon I hit up Mr S at the sweet spot and came back with mucho greenery and baked goods for pence, which has made me happy. I do love a bargain. Also cheekily asked a shop-worker who was unpacking DVDs/ books if I could have the bubble-wrap and they said yes. Have lots of bags of bubblewrap for the kid bruv to dispatch his books in. He was delighted.
We were watching a bit of news yesterday and they showed a family who had no power and they were cooking on one of those single-ring butane gas stoves, the kind you have in a case, widely available for circa £10. I'd told Mum I have one of these but she'd not seen it, so we were having a convo about it.
I think she was intruiged and may get one herself.
I wonder how many of the effected households were preptastic and how many will look at getting some preps in as a result of recent experiences?Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
