Caves? Do you think they would withstand the mightiest of destructive weather? If they would I think the question would be would us mere mortals survive the person who got there first!

My instinct is drawing me to collect wood from the great outdoors and invest in logs but I am soon to move I to an electric powered house. I do wish there was something temporary we could do in order to get fire powered heat indoors.

I asked the people who are fitting my stove the same question because I want to have one in the utility room eventually and he said you don't actually need a chimney they just go through the roof or sometimes out of the wall

  • Hi Guys,
Haven't watched the tudor programme yet - 9pm is a little late for me - but will watch it later today, I've loved the others.

Am I the only one then who loves the christmas adverts? I love the run-up to christmas but have never really engaged in the shopping/cooking frenzy side of things, however I do love to see them. The run up to christmas for me is the start of winter - a time to gather preps and store up for winter, spend time with loved ones ahead of the lean months and give thanks for another year survived. I'm never tempted to purchase, and in fact we don't have here whatever shop/item it is they're advertising but it wouldn't be christmas for me without them.

    WCS
  • I can't be doing with the christmas ads on the tele either but what is really beginning to wind me/us up big time is the drip, drip, drip of charity ads asking for just £3 a month with the pathos music in the background and the patronising voice in hushed tones implying that if you don't give then the child/donkey/dog/snowleopard etc will die and it will be YOUR falut!!! I give what I can to charities I believe in and we're not made of money so we can't just sign up for a regular £2/£3/£5 every month and don't even mention charity muggers in the street..........GGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

I recorded the new programme last night and will watch when I have a slot, I do however know the Weald and Downland Museum extremely well, we've been members there for 20 odd years (sadly lapsed at the moment as the dog doesn't like walking the grounds as there is a clay shoot in the next door estate and he doesn't like the bangs!) it's a wonderful place and well worth a visit should you be within reach or on holiday nearby. This is probably the time to confess that the last series they made the Wartime Farm was filmed at Manor Park Farm about 2 miles from the village, it's run by the council and again is a lovely place to visit especially at christmas when Mrs Earwicker will be cooking mince pies on the victorian range in the farmhouse kitchen. They have the tiniest church there where they hold carol services in the afternoon by candlelight it's quite beautiful!!!

I went to Mr.T this morning and if anyone is wanting some the tins of Princes Stewed Steak were down to £2 a tin, a saving of 45p and I have also discovered that they are selling tins of apple slices for 69p which are super in crumbles etc. and good value given the price of cooking apples with the added bonus that they don't wrinkle up and go off in the fruit bowl!!! Lyn xxx.

our nearest Tesco is miles away but in Farmfoods you can get:

3 tins John West stewed steak £5
3 tins John West stewed steak and kidney £5
3 tins Princes sliced beef in gravy £5
    3 double packs spam £5
3 tins Princes corned beef £5
Or a mixture of the above

  • Well, hardly anybody has a bsement. If we all had a basement it'd be easier for people to keep stuff.

Where to put everything's a problem for many.

Wondercollie lives in Canada and their houses are a lot different to ours, they are bigger and most of them have basements

  • Did anyone see Tudor Monastery Farm last night on BBC2? Thought there may be some prepping tips. I missed it, and will have to use catch up if it is worthwhile. I usually enjoy those programmes where they re-construct historical conditions anyway, even if they are bit of a cheat - Wartime Farm was well done.

Peter Ginn's cod piece ;) made of lot of us very happy :rotfl:

You just don't know where to shop and how to bulk buy. I have a three month supply of rations in our basement.

    wondercollie

That is very restrained in North American terms?

My friend's parents have two years supply of wheat vacumn-packed, I assume in the basement.

I also have a basement but it takes the tatties from the plot and the apple stores rather than dry goods. Like most UK basements it is a bit damp.

I think that we are used to the idea that we can leave some stuff in the ground and can walk to the shed if we need a shovel. At my cousin's I think the first job would be finding the shed.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • BB I don't know of a Farm Foods anywhere down here but those are amazingly good prices. £2 for the stewed steak is pretty cheap for Hampshire!!! Lyn xxx.
  • Am sitting here outraged - just paid £1.79 for a loaf of scottish plain bread in our local shop. It's a while since I bought a loaf but ran short today - can barely believe it!!!!! Lovely for toast though!
