Some of them beautifully made, charming, touching, obviously no expense spared, and I enjoyed them at first at one level, but they are trying to connect big business to what is personal about family occasion? Cant quite put my finger on it, but don't like it.
I can relate to this - I watched Mr M's advert with Ant 'n Dec and the little gingerbread man. I would far rather they had saved the thousands they probably had to pay Ant 'n Dec and brought their in-store prices down instead! We only have Mr M and Mr T in our area, so no amount of advertising would make me shop there cos it's on the other side of town....:j[DFW Nerd club #1142 Proud to be dealing with my debt:TDMP start date April 2012. Did anyone see Tudor Monastery Farm last night on BBC2? Thought there may be some prepping tips. I missed it, and will have to use catch up if it is worthwhile. I usually enjoy those programmes where they re-construct historical conditions anyway, even if they are bit of a cheat - Wartime Farm was well done.0

It has its own thread somewhere here - yes it was very good if not really prepping- related. How to make a pig-proof enclosure and pig house...? LOl0

Using the materials the land supplies, there are still quite a few wattle and daub buildings around.
The demonstration of making rush lights was useful.
I'd prefer not to live that lifestyle (I like my modcons and would rather not be attempting that level of physical labour,) but its useful to know what works.0 -

I hadn't seen it or it's predecessors before, but really enjoyed the part that I saw; lighting the fire in the middle of the house - no chimney - to keep all the heat in (very tall ceilings tho'), and she used charcloth to catch the sparks! Without this thread I wouldn't have felt smug, knowing what it is and how to make it!
I also enjoyed the fencemaking - wondering if I can adapt that to the top of the garden: and the wooden utensil making with the treadle lathe. Wonderful stuff.

I enjoyed every minute of it, but it really brought home how lucky we are in some ways, ie glass in our windows if nothing else. Oh was mesmerised by the lathe. The rush lights did look quite good didnt they, of course they had a very neat house so they could have naked flames. I envy anyone who has a real fire even if it is in the middle of the floor
Have to agree with Mar, very hard physical work from dawn to dusk and it had to be fitted in, maybe they will show them working in the pouring rain, struggling to get the crops in and knee deep in mud. One thing that is missing though is that there would probably be copious amounts of small children running around and being taught the work.
Oh well it is only meant to give us a glimpse of life in the past. Ds 's teacher at primary school used to lend us the 'How we used to live' series on video and we would sit and watch them for hours, they were really interesting and the children loved them.Clearing the junk to travel light

Today in the launderette I encountered a very unhappy Australian.
He is on a 6 week stay here - at someone's house. As a favour they bundled up his laundry and took it to the launderette. It was only after it had been washed and dried that they discovered the remnants of his biometric passport..... If this wasn't bad enough. I was there when he returned on the off chance that his wallet had been found. No it hadn't been laundered as he had used it afterwards. His wallet contains his cards and just about every means of ID. Which is bad enough if it happens when you are on home turf.
I resolved again to keep a laminate copy of everything!0 -
Afternoon peeps, what a lot I've read today!
Some really interesting articles some of you have posted, if a little worrying, yet I feel a tad vindicated!
I, too, dislike Christmas ads on principle, but appreciate the work that's gone into them, although the money could have been better spent! Our tree is only the third we've had in 28 Christmases, 90% of my decs are family 'heirlooms', rest are home made, and the wreath I make every year is based on a bought twig wreath that must be 20 years old. We buy few presents and tend to re-use things to make a different present. This year, I am looking for unusual, but cheap :rotfl:, glass or pottery dishes in CS into which I'll put homemade biscuits or sweets.

I can't be doing with the christmas ads on the tele either but what is really beginning to wind me/us up big time is the drip, drip, drip of charity ads asking for just £3 a month with the pathos music in the background and the patronising voice in hushed tones implying that if you don't give then the child/donkey/dog/snowleopard etc will die and it will be YOUR falut!!! I give what I can to charities I believe in and we're not made of money so we can't just sign up for a regular £2/£3/£5 every month and don't even mention charity muggers in the street..........GGGGGRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
I recorded the new programme last night and will watch when I have a slot, I do however know the Weald and Downland Museum extremely well, we've been members there for 20 odd years (sadly lapsed at the moment as the dog doesn't like walking the grounds as there is a clay shoot in the next door estate and he doesn't like the bangs!) it's a wonderful place and well worth a visit should you be within reach or on holiday nearby. This is probably the time to confess that the last series they made the Wartime Farm was filmed at Manor Park Farm about 2 miles from the village, it's run by the council and again is a lovely place to visit especially at christmas when Mrs Earwicker will be cooking mince pies on the victorian range in the farmhouse kitchen. They have the tiniest church there where they hold carol services in the afternoon by candlelight it's quite beautiful!!!
I went to Mr.T this morning and if anyone is wanting some the tins of Princes Stewed Steak were down to £2 a tin, a saving of 45p and I have also discovered that they are selling tins of apple slices for 69p which are super in crumbles etc. and good value given the price of cooking apples with the added bonus that they don't wrinkle up and go off in the fruit bowl!!!
