Welcome from windswept Wales! yes there wasnt any particular warnings but although it was bad I dont think it was exceptionally windy, maybe the gusts were a bit dramatic.
I sorted a will ages ago as on paper/assets I have quite a reasonable amount, cant spend land!
I too have very little religious beliefs although confirmed when younger ( read forced by my mother!) I certainly do not want to have a religious service and the thought of being buried with a load of strangers and possibly dug up by "time team!" in the future makes me cringe.
Ideally (and possibly a bit weird!) I would love to be buried on a patch on the farm (after Im dead BB!). There is a beautiful spot under a huge oak tree half way up the mountain, the view is spectacular over the whole valley and on a clear day the Severn Estuary and beyond to the Quantocks.
Its a bit crowded already as two of my horses are buried there (one I had for 28yrs) plus various cats, dogs & pets. I knew and loved all of them so to me it seems perfect, OH just thinks I am very strange!
If I am not to be buried there I suppose I could be cheaply cremated then scattered around there.

Well enough of the morbid talk hopefully I have a good 40 +years before I fall off my twig.
Today is a beautiful day and after the marathon log stacking I may attempt a tidy of the veg patch. I am a slob at the end of the season and if I dont get it done soon it will just look a mess until next spring starts to poke its head above the snow! Strangely I am almost hoping for a wet day so I have no choice than to do indoor work, dry and reasonable days means I am outdoors as soon as I can. If I get my wish a stock take of preps and packing my Winter Get Home Bag for the car will be my priorities. Anyhow suns shining and its beautiful here so Im off out! Bye

• Hi guys, I lurk on here but wondering if you could hewp me with a quick question (also posted on prepping for winter thread, sry)

I have most(!) of my winter preps done but have a quick question - my flat is currently 13 degrees throughout. I don't feel it as cold, and the kitten seems ok (with the fur coat n all lol). Does anyone know if I should be concerned at this temp or is it more a keep gentle moving (housework) and consider putting the heating on later? I live alone now so don't have an extra body to tell me if I'm mad and its freezing or not! In or around Gasgow and its very dry atm if that affects it.

Thanks

• Hi dragonette and welcome to the thread, our place is currently 14-16 degrees since I have so far resisted putting the heating on, I think if you are all reasonably healthy that sort of temperature is fine, I would keep it warmer if you have infants or elderly people around though (I leave it to you to define elderly, some of the 60+ year olds we know would protest strongly if so defined).
• Hi everyone  Takes me soooo long to catch up with all posts!!:o

Regarding weather forecasts, as TV and radio news is unbalanced in time/information spent on SE versus 'rest of the country', I have listened to the Shipping Forecast on Radio 4 for years as past of my prepping, and eventually, with help of g@@gle, taught myself what most of it means.

Saturday morning forecast at 5.20 gave West Wales coast Severe Storm, and east England coast Gale force, so it was a safe bet all land in between would be getting a good bit of a blow. Lots of branches and leaves lying about now, and ground sodden, but most people got ready last weekend, when we had nothing unusual for this time of year.

I heard it on the news recently (when the energy companies announced their latest price rises, the barstewards!) that during cold weather it is advisable to keep living rooms at 21 degrees and the rest of the house at a minimum of 18 degrees. I think that was targeted at elderly or other vulnerable people (say, with health or mobility problems), so I suppose a fit, active, robust person could knock a degree or two off those numbers.

• Thanks Perplexed Pineapple :) I do feel ok, but as I can't always sense or regulate my temperature well I like to be careful.

Personally, if the CH is at more than 18 degrees I'm wondering how many more clothes I can remove as I'm suffereing in the heat. As I don't have heating, this tends to happen when visiting friends. Not all of whom will want to see me down to underwear

Well, four people died on the day, and a teenager died the day before. Three houses (I think it was three) blew up, when a gas main fractured because of a falling tree, and half a million people were without electricity at the peak. Over 100 trees on railway lines, and more on cars. It wasn't nothing.

I was reading about why this was so awful down south, the main problem is population density, there are an awful lot more people in the south, so any bad weather has the capacity to affect a lot more people.

The other thing was tree health, because the south doesn't have very windy weather on a regular basis, many diseased trees that would long since have blown over in the north, are all still standing and blow over in large numbers once a good gale force wind happens.

The other factor is that by the time it gets windy in autumn, it's normally cold enough for most of the trees to have shed their leaves. The leaves act like little sails & massively increase the tree's vulnerability to strong winds. This year it's been pretty mild so only the trees whose hibernation (or whatever the tree equivalent is) is triggered by day-length have shed theirs.

Good evening folks.

Tonight is the first test run of the Panasonic Bread Maker. I have set it to finish at 6.45am when Economy 7 electricity finishes.

How vital is it to remove the loaf as soon as it's done?

Well the bread came out nice, but incredibly crumbly. Thanks for all replies. 'Fraid I have another query, if anyone knows the answer:

The breadmaker instructions say to put 1 ounce of butter in the mix. It says it adds flavour & softness to the bread. However the instructions on the flour pack don't mention fat at all if you are making by hand.

Would it work or be dangerous if I don't put the butter in the bread maker?
