Well after all that business with the storm last week, here at pineapple towers we've had everything thrown at us this evening. I didn't catch any warnings. Maybe I missed them, maybe we don't count because we're oop north
Thunder, lightning, tremendous wind, hail, torrential rain. I got caught out in it and was soaked in seconds. Just heard a crash which seemed to come from upstairs. Even the dog (who is fairly deaf) sat up straight in alarm with ears flat. But I checked and everything seems OK. Perhaps we'll find a chimney pot or two on venturing out.

Same weather here, I didn't see any warnings on the telly either. I can only think it's because we are as you say 'oop north'
Next door has got scaffolding up and is having some roof repairs, I am not going outside in the dark next to that for anything. I don't care what I hear crashing outside I will wait until it's light before checking anything out.
I kept forgetting to sort out my garden after last weeks storm warning and so fortunately everything is tied down and removed from windy blowingness positions. For once being too busy to do something had been a hidden bonus!0 -
I havn't yet made a will and really must get it sorted.
Has anyone else encouraged their elderlies to sort out, plan and organise things ? My side has done what needs to be and mum has decided that she wishes her body to be used for medical science and wants no fuss and minimum spent. She thinks funerals are a rip off and would rather any money go to me and my bro as we are both struggling somewhat. All her affairs are documented and organised and in one place along with her will and details of her wishes. Wish I could say I was as organised.
OH's mum after some matter of fact chats went to see the funeral directors and has chosen her coffin and discussed her funeral and made all the arrangements, including the buffet/sandwiches etc for after (when we were encouraging her to write down her wishes and think about what she would like we didn't expect her to actually organise it in advance). Hopefully all her papers will be fairly organised, but I won't bet on it.
After FIL fell ill about 7 yrs ago we were able to have the what if chat and he sorted out his will and both him and my mum have also sorted out the paper work for enduring power of attorney.
I prompted FIL and MIL to get organised so that it would remove the possibility of fallouts over what she/he would want according to others. Both now know their wishes will be met and OH and I will have less stress and will be better able to deal with the loss I hope.
So I guess what I'm saying is it's not just your own will/wishes/send off that needs prepping, but also ideally those that may expect or rely on you to organise theirs.
The conversations we had with each parent had their awkward moments and each one had a totally different view. My mum wants as little money to be wasted/spent as poss and no fuss or service etc. MIL wants church, cremation and wake the whole traditional thing. FIL has a funeral plan and we are aware of his wishes.
Sorry if this is all a bit morbid, but it's just as important I think having seen several families fallout and struggle in times of grief and I know that's the last thing our parents would want.0 -

On the subject of funerals I have very few relatives around. In fact I'm not even sure if they are still around. A will has been drawn up and assets go mainly to charity with a small amount to a friend who will take over the dog if she is still going on my demise.
I couldn't care less about my funeral - imo they are mainly for the living. They can stick me in a bin liner...
It's amazing how much death in total can cost. Even years ago the cheapest 'do' available cost around £1,000 for my Dad - plus various other costs. Some funeral directors can purposefully make you feel a bit stingy. But you actually don't have to go through any of that if it's what no one wants - I'm sure I've seen a leaflet somewhere.0 -

where too??:cool::p
The bad weather this weekend was less publicised than last week's, so it caught a lot of people out..
I am sooo tempted to try out one of those drinks can solar air things... but as hubby said when you need it the most ( in winter, and the night) it would be any good??
After last night and the electric going off for a few minutes, I have decided to try and keep a lighter in my pocket most of the time, and over the winter have the candles out in place ready..Work to live= not live to work0 -

Another one here who came online to check for the weather damage and found nothing. I'm sure Sky News thinks Scotland is a province in Antarctica. We had sideways hailstones the size of gobstoppers and the garden went white, then we had sleety rain in buckets. Today is very windy but lovely.
I'm thinking more on prepping for cold/bad weather now.Anything I buy is going to be as good quality as I can afford and manmade fibre only - wool silk and cotton.
EDITED - meant NATURAL fibres LOL0 -
Wool silk and cotton are not man made fibres.0
