Interesting about the wills ... I have a will, but I don't think my sister knows where to find it. And I'm dead sure she doesn't know where to find the scans of my financial affairs on my computer, as I've hidden and misnamed the file, in the name of security!

For my mum, I have some of her money in my name, which we did about 8 years ago for other purposes, but we had a chat recently, and earmarked some of that money for her funeral, and for the expenses that I, my brother and my sister will have in petrol, train fares etc, she doesn't want us to pay that sort of thing from our own pocket. She also told us what she wants done with her ashes, which has changed in the last few years, so I'm glad she spoke up!

  • Hi guys,
Hope everyone is well - have I missed anything??? :-). Hope the storm down south didn't cause too much damage - I saw some of it on the news and it seems to have been quite isolated in where it hit???? We chuckled to read about a special cabinet meeting to discuss possible impact - have they ever visited Scotland???????

Winter has arrived with a vengeance here - the boat has been off for a couple of days with high winds, and we've had hail and sleet showers - really impressive!

Prices are continuing to rise apace - am struggling to find ways to cut back anymore - we're using the dutch oven quite a bit over the week, and don't really have many places otherwise to cut back. Gone back to what we call "poverty rations", which of course are anything but - but for us this means nothing purchased in anything other than raw form from the shops - means more cooking/baking but really saves money for us, and the boys always say we eat better.

We're planning our usual low key christmas - we're all adults so easier for us, but i'm seeing signs of secret activity so guessing it will be a home-made christmas again! Last year one of my boys made wooden decorations which were hinged with those hooks/eyes that you put net curtains up with? basically small blocks of sanded wood (offcuts from kindling) and hook/eyed together and decorated with bits of felt - really lovely!

Anyway off to bake again prior to work this week (don't have a lot of energy left in the evenings on work days) and then back to my knitting.

    Keep warm and dry,
    WCS

ps anyone heard from Shegar/Sheila? thought about her the other day and realised we haven't heard from her for a while? Hope all is ok with her and hubby - I know she had health issues of her own as well.

Well, four people died on the day, and a teenager died the day before. Three houses (I think it was three) blew up, when a gas main fractured because of a falling tree, and half a million people were without electricity at the peak. Over 100 trees on railway lines, and more on cars. It wasn't nothing.

I should also say, I understand about the over-reaction to all things southern - its not even just English, its southern English. Very irritating, and I do *get* that.

  • Karmacat with respect I didn't say it was nothing, my thoughts were that the news over-dramatises potential storms in the south of england, and it hadn't near the impact expected, although for those affected it is very serious. I'm sorry to hear about those that died of course.
  • Speaking from the South/SW of England - it seems to us to be London/SE-centred! As all news & policy decisions are - seems that's the only area that counts & the rest of us are all bumpkins who could have chosen to move to "civilisation" if we weren't so stuck in the mud out here in the sticks...

Looks like a pretty vicious storm swept through Wales yesterday, though there's not a lot of coverage of it in the national news. Thinking of all my Welsh friends & hoping they weathered it OK.

  • Hi thriftwizard yes just read that on the news - really nasty! It's a worry isn't it about all the trees coming down - wonder why? I can understand forestry commission as they are planted close together and don't develop the root system they should, but older trees one would expect to be better anchored - I wonder if it's like the building on flood plain business and tree roots are being undermined by development, or is it just a case of old age?

And I totally agree with that - hope my 2nd post made that clear, but posting again just to be on the safe side :o:o:o

  • Hi Karmacat, yes I think we agree then! Reading back through the week's news its actually quite scary, as in a lot of places you cannot really mitigate against the effects of a storm can you? If a tree comes down or gas mains blow you really cannot do much to prepare - its a huge reminder of how powerful the weather can be.
