  • Echoing the nanny's thoughts -although she's expressed it much better than I could!
  • He has also arranged his funeral, I think he freaked the funeral director out a little

A bit surprised maybe, but freaked out I doubt it.

I have a friend who used to work for a Funeral Director (one of the big ones) and, after hearing about some of the things he's seen and heard  , I can't imagine any of them being shocked.
  • Reporting in on the lantern test.

Amazingly, 36 hours into the test, and it's still lit.

Doesn't look any dimmer than it did last night, either.

I work at a church sale every week. I had to come off the stalls and go to sorting out because I'd get so annoyed. Everything is sold off quite cheaply and yet people pretty much expect something for nothing. One lady when asked for £1 for inline skates slammed them down and said "you're too expensive" and stormed out. One lady had a pile of clothes, walked around then came back to a different staff member (who thought she'd paid) asked for a bag and walked out without paying. Now we're talking about all clothes around 50p, not real CS prices.
My mum heard people outside tell their friends "tell them it's for someone who's a single mum you'll get it cheaper".

It really takes the mick but I love to help those that really need it and some of the stuff goes for free to folk who have nothing and the money raised goes to help with decorating/household tasks and lots of other great community projects - so I hide myself away and try not to get too grumpy at the few who spoil it.

You sound like me! I do jumbles and either work on the door or on the toy stall. The people do my head in! We had a fight between an old lady and old man over a handful of out of date suncreen sachets... not to mention the theiving, it's shocking and I get so wound up!

Whoever shared that link to a crossbow pistol, have asked DH for one for Christmas now! He has air rifles, so I should be allowed a weapon or two of my own. Was going to take up archery but I thought these may be more accurate? Any know if it's legal to have one? (I know I can't hunt with it)

  • GQ - thanks for posting the Will Aid link. I have, myself, taken advantage of this offer and have an appt for next Friday. My Will was hurriedly drawn up soon after my divorce ten years ago when the children were still very little. I wanted to make sure that they would both still have contact with my side of the family coz I knew that the ex would try to cut them out.

Anyhoo, Will Aid month prompted me to update it - much easier now as everything will be left equally to the children now that they are adults.

However, I had to approach my sister to ask her to be an Executor. I'm a very organised person so there shouldn't be too much mess to sort out! I have also set out my funeral wishes to her i.e. as Pagan, green, eco-friendly as poss. I DO NOT WANT BLACK OR HEARSES OR CHURCHES I shouted at her:rotfl: She understands fully now:D

Please, peeps, think of it as another way of prepping - it won't be your SHTF moment but your relatives - make it as easy as possible for them.

Just looking at these - you can pick one up for £30 online.

Which is cheaper than the proprietary thermal cookers.
It's the old haybox principle. I've had some success with quilts but it's a faff and do you really want your bedding smelling of stew? :rotfl:
Or - the handier amongst us could take note of the construction and make their own. :)

Edit: Basically it's polystyrene and you can get that cheapish online.

I have some leftover vermiculite from when I bought a bag to insulate my big rocket stove ... interesting article, I hadn't fully thought it through about taking the pan from the hob and just putting it into the haybox ... but I think I'd want it all in a box of some sort, not just a socking great pad. Will definitely put it on the list of "things to make". At the moment, I've sent off for the bulbs to repair my maglite, and I'm finally learning how to use my wind up radios (after realising during the storm that if the leccy went, I didn't know how to do anything with them).

    Yes, perfectly legal.
