I work in a charity shop and we remove CD and DVD discs and just out the empty cases out. We number the cases and keep the discs in the drawer under the till.
  • I like the look of that lamp BesitBob and am so sad we don't have a 99p shop anywhere near.:(

You can find out where your nearest one is here.

Once you know where it is, keep an ear open for friends/relatives going to that town, and ask them to pick up a couple for you.

We are on the edge of Leyland,if you know where that is.

    I do indeed.

I was fairly close to Leyland this afternoon, picking up a car from Clayton-le-Woods.

I live on the other side of Lancashire, in Bury MBC.

It was a lot more than £1, (actually £17.50) but I just bought a similar thing from Amazon:

It has two light levels, and seems incredibly bright. Also, there is a small flashing LED to let you find it in the dark. I had to take the batteries out, as I found the flashing annoying, and did not want to waste the battery. Other than that, I'm very pleased with it.

    I've just bought three more.

I'm going to see how bright I can get my living room, using just the LED lanterns.

Then, I'm going to leave one on all night, to get an idea of how long a set of batteries will last.

ETA: Just tried three, and it was very bright.

Leaving one on, to see if it is still running by morning.

It was as near as dammit, 1900hrs when I switched it on.
  • Thanks bob but have already tried that. The nearest is Hartlepool at over 24 miles and then Middlesborough at over 31 miles.

Nobody I know would go that far when Newcastle is so much closer. Thanks for the thought though.

Might have been mentioned - but it might be worth catching bbc2 now with "great big energy saving challenge" ..

Sorry if it's only BBC Scotland

  • :grouphug: need someone to snuggle, have a stinking cold and feel so bunged up. Have cover myself in vapour rub ( a few years out of date but seems fine ) and am in bed. It was too cold to take kids trick or treating ( I only go to people I know ) so got the kids some sweets and let them have my t.v in their room so they could watch a DVD. Due to infection control:D:whistle: I have turn my lights and door bell off to reduce the spread of my cold to local kiddies. It has nothing to do with the fact I have no-more sweets in stock and am to skint to get any.

I had my friend pop in for a cuppa and on the subject of stealing she told me that she has had things taken from her porch. She caught a man going through a charity bag of clothes in her porch. When she opened her front door he bold as brass said "just taking this for my daughter" and walked off.. She was alone in the house so just shut her front door. She was up set as people don't appear to view her poach as an extension of her house. ( her porch has a door which you have to open to get in )

I recently put a bag out for charity by my front door. I don't leave it at the top of my drive as people have let their dogs piddle on them in the past sadly. I popped out for the day and later returned to find that someone has gone through the bag and taken all of the children's shoes and a handbag, The handbag was an unwanted gift that wasn't very nice so who ever took it had no shame or taste!!:rotfl:The other goods were fit to be taken so doubt it was the charity collectors.

I'm feeling so rough at the moment I feel like I'm walking in treacle and ache all over. I haven't done much with the kids this half-term but luckily they have had friends to play. I did feel a bit embarrassed when my friend came and the kids kept leaving the door open in lounge making it cold. I never have the heating on in the day and did offer to put the fire on but she said she was fine. I know she may think I'm tight but it me paying the bills at the end of the day. My eldest wore a t-shirt today but he put a vest on and had a hoodie on ( without prompt ! )

The links people have put up about CH pipes and things have been really interesting. Right off to make a cuppa, anyone for a brew?

and that even with 3 candles going she couldn't see well enough to read. She joked that it reminded her of her young day, except that they were set up for no power back then.

    Not cheap but works brilliantly.
I bought one for my elderly mum who's had a stroke and has problems walking. She's had a few power cuts, the last one being Monday this week.
As soon as the power goes off it lights up so she can immediately see and as it lifts out of the charger she is happy to wander round with it to the loo for example. No danger of tripping over in the dark and placed on a table it's fine for reading next to it.
It makes mum feel less frightened and more prepared.
