I have a feeling they tested the egg thing on Mythbusters, and found that they didn't keep any better when treated with anything than they did just as is in a cool dark place. Darned if I can find the reference too it though.

I would watch Doomsday Preppers just out of noseyness but we haven't got Sky.
Good post Meher - it's fun learning how to cope on your own and being grown-up girl guides :D plus on the way we learn things about wartime and history and I love that. It's just commonsense to me personally, I'm not into Doomsday and total Armageddon stuff. If that happens then it happens and is meant to be, but anything less than full-on end of the world then I'll have a bash at surviving it :D

For those dehydrating these are the cheapest 'Kiln*r' type jars I have found. They come in four sizes.

:o I was in the army surplus place yesterday enquiring as to the price of paracord as I only had some leftover from my bushcraft course last year.

The answer was 25p a meter or you could buy a roll of 100 meters for £10.99. I think I may be able to make myself a paracord bracelet with a clip from my stash of salvaged nylon buckles. Or two or three [STRIKE]dozen[/STRIKE] bracelets

:) It's so-named because it was invented as parachute cords. It's a very strong synthetic cord with a woven casing and multiple strands inside the casing which can be separated out individually for smaller sewing tasks.

As to what it can do, it would be vitually impossible to give an exhaustive list, but no military type or prepper would want to be without it.

You can use it in camping or shelter building, to tie all sorts of things up, substitute shoelaces, for a bow-drill to make fire the old-school way, anything you can imagine. Bit like gaffer tape (aka duck/ duct) tape and WD40; once you've discovered it you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. ;)

Practically-minded people esp in the countryside, have always hoarded string and rope and binder-twine because it has so many practical applications.

You could even use it to string a hammock between the trees and lie in it playing cat's cradle..........

  • I was reading through some old Girl Guide material DDs have kept from way back and came across a really useful chapter about making camp gadgets from fallen wood and cord, things to keep your sleeping roll off the ground, rudimentary shelving for storage even a table to eat off, lots of useful applications there. Don't know if it's available on line as it's really old style guiding but I'll look and let you know.

Thanks MEHER for being the voice of calculated reason, if there were more folks thinking likewise there would be less misunderstandings.

MAR - Spot on, if it's Armageddon so be it, but anything less and I'll tackle it!!!!

Have a good day everyone, Cheers Lyn x.

  • Just calling in to say hello before the next wave of storms hit us..the storm clouds are gathering on the horizon. I took my new solar powered torch out with me last night to a party, with the result that Lidl's are going to be mobbed this morning in Corfu with all my friends trying to get hold of one LOL. Unfortunately it also looks like a new mobile phone which meant people thought it was a solar powered torch and a mobile phone...that would be a money maker! It only took five pulls of the wind up cord to charge the battery in it and its still shining brightly now...its a winner in my eyes!

Now have my freezer and stock cupboards full of goodies. The cooler weather and storms mean its now easier to think about getting ready for the winter months. I think its going to be a hard winter so need to get my head into gear and just get on with it.

    Have a great weekend folksxx
