Ok many thanks everybody re dehydrating - I will try things once I feel a bit more human, bit tired today. I just want dried veg for soup as soup is always filling with home made bread.0

Thanks for all the great advice! We will be getting our euros from thomas cook as the rate is quite good there, 1.25 yesterday anyway! The advice is to ask for euros in smaller denominations. We will be in Zante which I gather is also on a fault line and has had quakes in the past! I can still remember living in cyprus, as a little girl, and after waking up in the night to the sound of saucepans falling out of the cupboards, Dad holding me up to see the cats eyes on the mountain roads moving in a tremor. I am sure I remember that the houses had a crack along the middle as they were built to fall apart (safely?) in the event of a quake. My brother slept through it all and refused to believe us the next morning!:D
I think the bug out bags are a very good idea btw as some years ago we had to be evacuated at very short notice as builders had hit a nearby gas main and it had caught fire. We had 2 young children at the time and thankfully we had friends out of the danger zone we could go to. I was very relieved when we could go back though as we were running out of clean clothes/nappies etc., I wish I had been better prepared for such an event!
Today I am rushing about prepping and freezing all the food stuff we won't be using before we go and that won't keep! Now have a portion of carrots, cabbage, rhubarb in syrup and frozen some bananas in their skins ready to make banana bread on my return.
You have all reminded me that I do have a dehydrator which I really should be using!

Fuddle , you just gave me a good idea! I could use the left over heat in my breadmaker to dehydrate food...it stays hot for hours after making bread in it. I will also use the left over heat in my counter top electric oven to dry apples etc in slices....great stuff...not only are you lot helping me prep but you keep giving me good ideas on how to use the stuff I have and not spend any extra!

MAR - Whitworths make packets of dried vegetables and dried onions, I've seen them in Mr.M and they are under 50p a packet. They aren't very big but I think would be enough for a batch of soup per packet. Not strictly OS but a lot easier if you are feeling poorly with the ME. They have a good long shelf life too might be easier on you that doing your own Cheers Lyn x.0

Glad to be of help 2tonsils
re the use of dehydrated stuff we have a dehydrator thread on old style which has loads of suggestions I use some of my peppers, mushrooms etc for making pizzas and you honestly can't tell the difference from fresh.
I recently did some nectarines and mango and used them in Hugh FW's banana bread instead of the apricots and that worked well
The good thing is its not just soups and stews you can use them in for example dried peppers and mushrooms can go in a chilli,I use dried courgette for topping a quiche as well as dried toms.0 -
I get the Whitworths veggie packs from MrA's and they are great, tasty vegetables and a good mixture. Wish you could buy big tubs of them though, but as yet I haven't found anyone who does mixed dried veggies.0

KITTIKINS - Do you or anyone you know have a card for a cash and carry store? You night find a catering pack which would last a very long time, Cheers Lyn x.0

Yes, I've got a Co$tco card and have a reasonable sized tub of dried onions but can't find mixed veggies or single type dried veggies there, just onion/garlic/herbs and spices.
I did strike lucky (I hope, haven't ever tried them before) and got 12 small jars of veggies in water in the reduced section in MrT's earlier this week.
Thanks for the Amazon link - whilst that bag is mahoosive, they do have 1kg and 3kg bags further down the page0
