HJ - if my comments have offended you I appologise profusely, There is no circumstance in which I would choose to be offensive to anyone. I do read through all the posts on the thread every day, and I do not mean to imply that tolerance and humour are entirely missing it's just that I wouldn't leave adverse messages (You haven't done so I hasten to say) on a thread I didn't agree with, I just wouldn't read on there again but leave others who wish to do so alone. I hope the words I have used do not cause you further upset as I do uphold anyones right to their own opinion, it doesn't have to agree with mine.0

You know the Olympics were planned for 7 years right? That's some forward thinking/convenience of the Govt to hide impending disaster behind a major sporting event.
There is potential bad news and conspiracy all over the internet. I personally believe that when times are tough we should concentrate on the here and now with some sensible prep for the future. Going looking for worries seems a bit futile to me.
I should have made it clearer. I don't believe that it was the plan to use the Olympics when it was planned 7 years ago. Nor necessarily even a year ago but what it has allowed is the chance to use it as a diversion to try and hudwink the population and world that all is well in the UK now and put a gloss on things.
But I agree with you HJ I really am trying to live in the here and now. That's all any of us can do."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Heads down and noses back to the grindstone Mrs L - tell me is it possible to dehydrate naturally on a hot windowsill or airing cupboard? I'm sure I read summat in one of the wartime books that they were doing that...?0

The bit that really scares me is what happens to disabled people and those that can't take care of themselves.
Angel Jenny, that's the thing about preparing for problems, now's the time to think about where you'd go & what you'd do - last time Mar (I think) gave us scenarios, it made me realise I would struggle right now. So, I'm prepping more. I've told my parents they & their home are part of my emergency plan, I'm getting things so I could get the boys, the animals & me to my parents. I'm making baby steps, but I'm doing it! You can make a grab bag & have copies of your important documents in it. You can think about where to go. & you can talk to your parents about it - though you can't make them listen...prepareathome wrote: »Jeepers just checked last bread strike was 1978 gosh I remember it, going up to pick up the bread every day. I was on my own then with my two year old daughter, thought it was a bit later.
HJ people are just glad to sound out ideas to others who are like minded as they cannot do this in RL and does no harm surely, better they talk these things out rather than if something did happen (flooding , fire nearby, gas leak) and they had to leave their home and didn't take what they need. Out of this of course comes the chat of leaving home and living elsewhere.
Its true no thread is ever going to stay the way everyone wants it. They wind this way and that right on subject, a bit off then back.
Hope you stayxxx
Gosh, I remember mum making bread, but I never asked why...Hardup_Hester wrote: »Another place to hide food would be to take the side or end off the bath & hide it round the bath. I had a quilter friend who did this to hide her stash from her husband.

Ah, good idea! But I worry I'd forget & lose stuff there if/when we move...
Did an online shopping order that came this evening with 24 x 2 litre bottles of water - the delivery chap commented that I must not like tap water, & I vaguely said 'oh, well, it's in case the waters off anytime... Like frozen pipes, y' know...' I don't often get supermarket deliveries, every few months, but it was good to stock up on heavy stuff. Now I can easily use the trolley to get lighter stuff & bring straight into the house to unpack.0 -
Do you mean personally MAR or your produce? I feel dehydrated whenever I sit in the sun in a window I've never however sat in the airing cupboard but for you I'd give it a go and report back if able to !!!!!!!
Seriously though I believe you can dry produce in the airing cupboard on the same mesh trays that you would use in the oven, it only needs a gentle heat over a period of time and you would have to leave the airing cupboard door open to allow any moisture to evaporate off. It would take quite a long time with that method but would work very well. I don't see why the windowsill wouldn't work either as the instructions for a solar dehydrator are to move it into the sun whenever you can and keep the trays covered to keep insects off, it would just take a while and you'd probably have to move your trays during the day to other locations in the house as the sun moves round. I'll have a look through my wartime cookery books and see what they say and let you know timings if they give them Cheers Lyn x.0 -
If the end of the world is as near as you guys think, I am not sure hoarding food is going to help you an awful lot, if the end is coming I intend to get very drunk :beer:grandma247 wrote: »True.
It is good to be prepared for "likely" scenarios and things we can do something about but there is no point in worrying about things that we can do nothing about, that is just wasted energy.PolkaDotsAndLace wrote: »Like others, I'm all for being prepared (storecupboards, first aid, etc) and have found this thread useful for ideas in events such as snow, power cuts etc but can't help but feel some of the latest posts just border on scaremongering and actively looking for things to worry about.
I shall join Redruby in the drunk corner if the end of the world is nigh!
All of the above and that corner is going to be quite full:rotfl:"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

And that is why I keep coming back.Thank you :j A string of apple ring will be hung tomorrow as an experiment - sun on sill permitting

I'm willing to lie still and dehydrate to a crisp on a hot sunny windowsill.. just need to find one wide enough!
Thing is, it must have been done before dehydrators were invented, so why not not pretend they haven't and just try it eh. But my house faces either south or north - nothing in between. But the stove is always on and the water is always boiling so its free heat really.0 -
MAR - I know you can dry mushrooms and peppers on a thread hung over a stove, that would be the other thing to try just don't hang them too low or they'll cook not dry. Apple rings would dry like that too over a stove. Why do folks jet off to forn parts when they can dehydrate on their own windowsills? Life's imponderable sometines isn't it? Cheers Lyn x.0
