Haven't you heard of the EVOO method of cleansing? I use it most nights, extra virgin olive oil spread on the face, gets eye makeup off, clean flannel soaked in fairly hot water wiped all over, generally no need for moisturiser (sometimes I need it as it can be very drying). Been doing it for nearly 2 years, cheap, quick and effective.

Not sure it stores for long though

Stores for 18 months to 2 years if kept properly( just gogglled it) so maybe not the gold plated investment I was hoping for... ah well back to tuna TP and tinned tomatoes then.

Thanks for the heads up on the EVOO never heard of it before, wonder if it will do anything for my ancient reptilian fizzhog?
  • can anyone please give me a link to the blackout book people have mentioned,? is it available on kindle? sounds an interesting read,

  • Dandelion flower petals can be used raw in salads and sandwiches, you can also make dandelion flower wine but to do that you must remove the green calyx from behind the flower head as it makes the wine bitter before processing the petals. It always seems a pity not to utilise the abundance of dandelions that come for free ech year doesn't it? Cheers Lyn xxx

Looking through my preserving book this morning I found a recipe for Elderberry jelly (jam type) if anyone would like the recipe I'll happily post it here, Lyn x.

Surprisingly it is drying. You wouldn't really think of it would you? I was an avid user morning and night and found it very effective at cleaning and moisturising. The problem came when I developed a dry patch that looked sore and inflammed (didn't hurt) around my nose that just wouldn't go, increasing in size.

It went when I quit that method. I think I used it too much and ready to use it of an evening only as a make up remover but wash the whole lot off and moisturise with a my Aldi moisturiser.

EVOO is the best cleanser I have ever tried. Just 'gan canny' as my grandma would say.

    *use it sparingly ;)

On the subject of diy toiletry solutions - well more 'medical 'actually - was on the point of buying some capsaicin cream online when I had a lightbulb moment and consulted Mr Google - and yes - there are a ton of 'recipes' online for making it yourself :D
Anyway still in medical mode, I visited a health forum looking for info about certain bothersome symptoms. One post caught my eye.
Thinks....That person has got the same as me - it's incredible!
Was considering logging in and replying when I realised. That person was me - posted some months earlier.:eek::eek:

I would just like to thank you preppers. We've made elderberry syrup at a cost of 52p (lemon and ginger) I used cloves, star anise, honey and cinnamon from the cupboard (some about 3 year old) and obviously foraged elderberries.

A lesson learned for life, one that I will repeat for sure every autumn. Thank you :)

    For the use of:

Add about one dessert spoon to a mug, pour over hot water. Taste and add more syrup or sweeten if required.

Must be drunk well diluted as the only time anyone gave it to a child undiluted the bedclothes ended up purple splattered (they thought it was "cough medicine").

I find it works for about 2 hours.

Anyway have 6 bottles stashed now and used the pasteuriser to deal with some plums, pears and blackberries (separately) whilst the water was still hot. Thought the black berries had not sealed but the lid was nicely concave this morning.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

RAS thank you so much. I had it in my head that it was a neat spoonful so incident avoided. ;) Much appreciated.
  • I made elderberry syrup a couple of years ago and after I'd strained the juice off was surprised at the amount of berry material left in the strainer. Couldn't bring myself to throw it away so I made jam with it. Used it on toast and yoghurt. Yum!

Completely different subject: On the Gastronuts CBBC programme last Wednesday, they were teaching children how to survive in the wild, including how to purify water. One of the things they used was a water purifying straw. I Hadn't heard of this before (but maybe you all have). Thought this would be a good idea for the prepping.
