Hey, OP here. Thanks for all the links and stuff - I'll be sure to check these out next time I have to refill.

Also, I have a cartridge that I know is full but the computer won't register it. I think there's a chip on it that must be faulty? Very annoying!

    What type of printer?

If it is an all in one have you tried swapping the ink having disconnected the device from the PC then reconnecting it?

trust me if they do have an anti clogging agent in them then they don't work very well and Santer is notorious for sticking up for epsom printers.

Santer does give good advice in fairness.

Another question in his play may have been:-

Santer - Do other suppliers put special agents (not mini 007s) in their ink as well?

Company- Sorry we are not a liberty to say.

Seems the use of anti-clogging agents is common

" Original cartridges typically have a chemical within the ink designed to prolong its life and protect the printer head from clogging up, "

" The most severe repercussion of a CISS on your printer will, more often than not, come from low-quality inks clogging the print head. "

" Although the upfront price for purchasing original cartridges might be more than those sold by third parties, it is worth the price, especially for quality, as it reduces mess, and continuously creates sharp images, and durability by preventing clogs and increasing the lifespan of your printer. " Besides, trustworthy ink quality of original tubes consists of advanced chemicals that prevent blocking of ink about the printer heads, thus making certain they effectively print obvious and sharp images. "

The question is if you save £30 per set of inks and your printer costs £80 you can afford to change it every 3rd set whatever. Even less for the budget printers.

I have certainly used tens of cycles on compatibles without issue for general printing.

There may be a risk in not using genuine cartridges but the printers are fairly low quality at this level, there is just as much risk in it failing anyway, for a whole host of reasons IMO.

Have started running a couple of printers with refillable cartridges, which gives control over the quality of ink used.

They reset when filled and do not do the usual head clean, they are simply recognised by the printer, register in the status monitor and are ready to print

Amazon is worth looking at for bulk ink, though the prices vary quite a bit, and bigger isn't always cheaper

I have bookmarked the page. Need to think that one through as I remember the mess I got into just refilling a black cartridge on a canon mono printer:o

I wonder how they reset themselves? Little ball valve and some form of touch plate or some form of temperature/humidity control?

Seems to be to do with the chip

" Simply fit the refillable T0711-T0714 compatible ink cartridge set, use as normal, when the cartridge is rejected or is shown as 'empty' simply remove, refill and resintall, the micro chip on the front of the refillable ink cartridge will reset automatically without the need for a cartridge chip resetter! "

As to filling, there are two holes, remove the coloured plug, then the syringe fits through the white nylon plug, which has a hole in, I leave the coloured plug out as I figure this is the same as removing the label from compatibles.

Another advantage is they can be used with head cleaning fluid if you get a stubborn blocked nozzle

I didn't get the set with inks, as their inks are expensive compared to amazon and ebay

If you buy a set without ink, you do not get the syringes, so I got a set of three with this

    http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/universal-colour-refill-p-282.html

Refresh have a refill by post for some printers, currently it is £7 for the black ink and £9 for the colour ink.

    http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/refill-by-post.html

They reckon on getting as much ink into a standard cartridge as a high capacity one as they remove some internal bits.

    "
If you send us a standard capacity cartridge then by taking it apart, removing any restricting material and replacing the sponges we can often turn your cartridge in to a high capacity equivalent."
  • Dear fellow MSE's ..

Not used this site for a while especially the forum, we have a delightful HP all in one printer that drinks ink like it's petrol.

Nearly all the colours are out, so needing to purchase them all plus the larger black sized one too.
The cartridges have the clever chip and detect if we dont use original cartridges...

Any ideas or sites that I can use to buy them cheaper would be gratefully received.

    Thanks x
