E-Cigarettes and air travel

  • Even if you get one of the ones with a big blue LED on the front? Surely it would be easy to enforce, walk up and have a look and a sniff, not exactly CSI material is it. probably the real reason is the lack of social skills of the enforcement staff.

yep, the ones my O/H use light up blue, surely doesn't need many brain cells to work out that it's not a real cig, even from a distance.

No not quite, if you are going to use one on a coach, make sure people can see what you are doing, not hide it with a paper bag like the idiot on the M6 Toll.

I think as per rules it is forbidden in the terminal building due to above mentioned reasons but I doubt it to be a hold luggage item and it can be hand carried while passing security check.

I think some of them look like applicator tampons rather than cigarettes and I know I am not the only one.

  • Well, just had a phone call from Thomson, they are adamant that E-Cigs are only allowed in hold luggage, which is contrary to the information given on their FAQ page as linked by Antrobus where it only states they can not be used on the aircraft. I stated that they were allowed through security and I asked if Thomson staff would be searching bags which have already been searched by security staff and just got told to take enough to last whilst waiting then put the rest in the bin, I really don't think she had a clue.

the older versions of E-Cigs did look like a white plastic tube, i don't think they lit up or gave out any vapor, however, the newer ones do look like a Superking size cigarette with the finish mimicking a real cig, however most seem to light up blue.

Nicorette ones still look like the tube type, no smoke etc.

Always be safe with those. Don't use them in the middle of a busy airport, you can easily pop to the lav and have a quick puff. the vapour dissipates quickly, and is only produced when you actually vape it (pull in a draw of it) so in a lav, wouldn't be noticed, and this does apply to air plane toilets too (albeit it might be against airlines rules). BUT the big thing about it, don't be suspicious. don't be all sneaky and try and remove them from your bag all secret like. you will get someone who notices and wants some goodie points for pointing it out.

When you get on the plane, and sit down, remove them then and put in pocket.

It's not so much that they're dangerous, but more than they're not accepted, almost as much as smoking itself isn't accepted any more in places like that.

Word of warning though, depending if OH's got a system one, ie a proper kit (refillable etc) then I would put the "nicotine flavours and liquids" through the hold, marking the box with exactly what they are. Plus if OH has a manual one, to always remove the battery from the cart. Accidentally knocking the button on a manual ecig will set off a vape cloud (and possibly what happened in the coach incident)
If it's one of these from tescos, etc. then none of the above is a problem.

She uses the disposable ones from Tesco (10 Motives) which although supposedly equivalent to 40 cigs, last her a lot longer that 40 cigs would.
