Thing to shut off a radiator - what's it called?

An alternative approach is to loosen the connections either side of the rad and then rotate it until it is lying on the floor/supports horizontally.
You obviously need some play in the pipes, but it can be a much much easier way to do this, and you won't have to worry about litres of dirty water inside the radiator.
I have to agree chap, this is the way I try to do it if the intention is to simply decorate or plaster.
Can't recal if it's been mentioned or what the floor covering is OP, but put down a sheet of polythene taped around the pipes, then old towels over the floor, which ever way you do it you will lose some water and it's likely to be black as said. You will also have to re-bleed and possibly re-pressurise the system depending on the type.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

They are removing it so it can be replaced later so don't want to do that. All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life..." :whistle:0

Leif you still missed the point!
Its a forum to post advice, some of the advice, like i said, an accident waiting to happen. There's a lot of information that's not posted when people say "its easy"!
You commented that I was scaring the OP into finding a trade to carry out the work, wrong again, I said it was a potentially costly mistake to take on work, involving dirty usually black water, in a property that almost definitely has carpets and possibly a room below to damage.
You may be an accomplished DIY'er but that's all, I may walk into your house and spot your DIY and smile to myself as its wrong or barely right.
The clue is in the name "Moneysavingexpert.com" even if the OP was charged £40 for doing the work its a whole lot better than a couple of hundred if its done incorrectly. Hence the get 'someone in to do it"!
You made comments about trades not completing their work correctly and you're right there are lots of rip off merchants but a hell of a lot more good guys out there trying to pick up the pieces. Insurance company's are now refusing to pay out on damage caused by poor DIY work, the sensible route is to find a tradesman, a good one, and stick with them.
I will except your apology on behalf of the good tradesmen on this forum but cut the trade bashing down unless the OP has stated a tradesman has ripped them off please, work is increasingly hard to find (and get paid for) that goes for A.Penny.saved comment too.

Sorry but that bit you posted there sums it up.
Do not post advice.
Simply give your view.
This is a money saving site, the fact that there are a few trades persons around is even more reason not to take advice, they have a vested interest.
Listen to what everyone has to say then go and get advice based on the info you have learnt here.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I give up!!!
I'm sorry you're now saying that advice from a tradesman is now not to be taken as they have a vested interest????
How do I have a vested interest in a tradesman getting business miles away from me???
The tradesmen/women on here are giving free advice, how did you work that one out???????
Any advice from an Accountant about a money issue not to be taken?
Any advice from a solicitor about a legal issue not to be taken?
I'm not going to argue with you as that statement is just plain daft!0 -

+1 there Unc.
Cyclone. I've never heard such tosh. Trades people are criticised if we do not comment and then criticised if we do. My instinct here is to see you as the typical knee jerk know nothing who knows the price of everything.
Prove me wrong by putting together a cogent and insightful response worthy of our time to read and learn from explaining how you arrived at the wild post UB responded to. All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life..." :whistle:0 -

Well i guess some people are waiting for my response so I will.
As one of your "tradesmen" I resent that remark, we give our advice FREE on here, we have not got a vested interest at all we get no work & no money from here, we do it to try & help people save money & possibly have ago themselves, sometimes employing a trade is the easiest & most cost effective option, but if that isn't good enough for you may i suggest you sod off & leave the advice to those of us with a "vested interest"I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Just in case the OP has not been put off by the 'discussion' it is a simple job and this link http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/REMOVING_A_RADIATOR.htm shows how its done.0
