This thread reminds me of the Ka I saw up in the valleys with an unsecured washing machine hanging out of the rear hatch and a rear arch gap narrow enough that you probably couldn't even get a credit card in there.

The passing police traffic car didn't pull them, presumably they wern't speeding.

I've done that with an old Skoda. Concrete hearth, and fireplace. Couldn't lift it all the way in, too heavy, just tipped up over the back. Right down on the bump stops, all the way to the tip, half hanging out of the back. No one bothered.

If the windows are open the air enters through them and out the boot how can the exhaust get sucked in? Unless the front pipe/manifold is leaking of course.
    .

The low pressure behind the car, cause by the destruction of the aerodynamics of the rear of the car causes a rear vortice that sucks exhaust gas into the interior of the car, due to the pressure differential created in the interior between the front and back of the cabin. Furthermore, because the cabin is not now effectively one piece, the windscreen is more liable to movement and cracking with wind pressure + pot holes, so keep your speed under 30 mph.

there will also be a secondary vortice peeling of the extreme edge of the tailgate, if its open, similar to the wingtip vortice on a jet.

Furthermore if the load extends beyond the back of the car, you will need a warning triangle at the back to indicate oversized load.

ive seen plenty of mini vans with no rear window so I seen no problem with this.

Incidentally, for MOT a car has to have two working mirrors, one MUST be the internal rear view, I don't know how the MOT treats vans with no rear windows.

Thought one had to be the offside external (RHS from drivers seat), not an internal.

Wrong. must have two working mirrors of which one is the driver's door mirror. This covers vans just fine.

I've had an Escort pass it's MOT after the rear view mirror fell off and I've had an Astra pass it's MOT after someone smashed the mirror off the night before my MOT, just took the remains of the mirror base off and put gaffer tape over the hole.

No markers are required for an overhang of less than 1 metre, although marking the end clearly is a good idea.

For up to 2 metres you just need to make the ends of the load "clearly visible". C&U regs don't specify what that entails but anything bright (and preferably reflective" will meet the requirement.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend driving a Ka with something sticking out the back by 6 feet with or without markers but a couple of feet as the OP said isn't a big problem.

and you regularly checked up on all these vans for months to make sure nothings happened?

Whats your point, many vehicles have no rear view through the vehicle.
  • as long as it is secure and the lid secure and numberplate, isnt obscure.

more importantly is the weight of it, as long as it doesnt exceed the vehicle max weight load youll be fine. hard to do with wood

Many thanks again everyone for your advice - I have taken it all on board. This morning I discovered a friend of mine has a Volvo estate and is very up for a trip out:D. Result.

They may not be obscured, but the tailgate (you really don't know what that is), will be angled upwards, making your brake lights more difficult to see.
Yup, really didn't know for sure:o. I've known what tailgating is for years but the way the question was phrased left me unsure whether it was the bit with the lights on etc as the boot lid being up doesn't affect the lights visabiity of a Ka. Anyway, never too late to learn and now I know!
I do know how to change my tyes and spark plugs though, so not completely dense :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
