There is a risk of exhaust fumes being sucked into the car, it may say it in the owners handbook.

You wouldn't believe what I've driven with sticking out of the back. Usually I can't tie the tailgate down as Paperbird says, as the load covers the catch, so anything from actually around the tailgate, the rear wiper, to the tow ball bracket, or the tyre carrier underneath. The police haven't cared once. Empty the junk and paper out of the back though, or you have to run back for it when it blows out.

I took a double mattress up the tip recently...in a convertable. Folded in half and stuffed in behind the front seats. Got a few funny looks.

Get someone with a decent sized car to pick it up for you.

You need to open the front windows to stop the exhaust gas getting sucked in and killing you.
The tailgate needs to be secure or or will move with the wind pressure on it. You need something to protect the glass. So easy to clip the glass with the load and smash it.

Or just do it (it isnt illegal) and dont worry, tie it down as said and you will be fine.

What's a tailgate...is it the boot door? This will be tied down to the furniture not flapping open.
The lights and number plate will not be obscured.

They may not be obscured, but the tailgate (you really don't know what that is), will be angled upwards, making your brake lights more difficult to see.

the brake lights are not on the tailgate on a KA.. unless it has a high level brake light but the 2 main ones are still visible with the boot open

If you open the windows exhaust gas will get sucked in. Keep the windows closed and the vents open. Use the fan if stuck in traffic.

If the windows are open the air enters through them and out the boot how can the exhaust get sucked in? Unless the front pipe/manifold is leaking of course.

Its the low pressure behind the car that cause the exhaust to get sucked into the boot.

The interior fan wont supply enough airflow to keep the gas out.

This thread reminds me of the Ka I saw up in the valleys with an unsecured washing machine hanging out of the rear hatch and a rear arch gap narrow enough that you probably couldn't even get a credit card in there.

The passing police traffic car didn't pull them, presumably they wern't speeding.
